Spartacus: Vengeance Gets a Premiere Date, New Trailer (VIDEO)

The latest chapter in the bloody beefcake bonanza known as the Spartacus saga is upon us! Spartacus: Vengeance has an official premiere date: January 27 at 10pm on Starz. Vengeance is the proper sequel to the series that started it all—Spartacus: Blood and Sand. (A six-episode prequel, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, preceded it.) The original Spartacus actor, Andy Whitfield, died tragically from non-Hodgkins lymphoma on September 11. Weighted with the unenviable task of filling Whitfield’s sandals in the title role is another Aussie actor, Liam McIntyre, a relative unknown to American audiences (he had a small part in The Pacific).

The new season will begin a few weeks after the conclusion of “Kill Them All,” the spectacularly graphic massacre that ended Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Only the fate of the entire Roman Empire has hung in the balance in the ensuing 24 months. Talk about a cliffhanger! Back for more are Lucy Lawless as Lucretia, Peter Mensa as Oenomaus, Many Bennett as Crixus, and babyfaced Dustin Clare as Gannicus. Sadly, John Hannah’s delightful Batiatus—who figured prominently in the prequel—had his throat slashed by Spartacus in “Kill Them All” (relive the moment in glorious slow-motion here).

Is McIntyre worthy of the role? Here’s a preview of Vengeance. He certainly looks the part, but comparisons will inevitably dog this guy through the season. Let’s give him a break, yeah? As far as I’m concerned, any new episodes of Spartacus at all are a reason for celebration—preferably by TEARING OFF MY ENEMY’S HEAD AND SHOWERING MYSELF IN HIS STILL-WARM BLOOD! ARRGGHHGGHGH!!!!!!!

Sorry. I tend to get a little carried away when watching this show.

I will miss andy to (sniff...tear drops...) Liam is stepping into the role and I am confident that he will hold his own, I got that much from the trailer and how he is so excited about the show and the direction it is taking... I along with other fans were praying for Andy to beat Cancer and I am sad he is gone, my prayers go out to his family... I am super excited that the show will go on and that they have found Liam to take up the role and push forward... I am sure that this is going to be an awesome season, no doubt...

It isn't Andy (sniff...), but I will give Lian a chance. I love Spartacus anyway. The artistry of the blood.

I'm all for the new season of Spartacus. Can't wait. I am sad though, that Andy passed. I was really praying and hoping that he'd pull through. Liam has some huge shoes to fill, but he's in great company, the cast is awesome and the writing is amazing.

Anxious to see what Steven DeKnight's brilliant yet ignored show has in store. Liam McIntyre has a difficult task ahead of him but I'm ready to give him a shot because this crew hasn't made a casting mistake yet.

Most anxiouslu awaiting the return of my television crush, the beautiful Viva Bianca, returning as Ilithya.

Already prepared for this by putting a bunch of towels around the tv set, cos whenever I watch an ep, testosterone literally oozes out of the screen.

I can't wait to check this out and I hope people won't be so hard on Liam as I doubt Andy would have wanted that, because that's just how great he was. The production value looks just as great as ever.

Can't wait no matter who the casts are

It's always hard replace another actor when everyone will inevitably compare you to the previous one. Especially if the previous one died. A lot of people will go: "We're so disappointed, he's nothing like Andy". But the question of course is if Liam McIntyre is a good Spartacus, not if he is a good Andy Whitfield.

I'll reserve my judgement until I've seen a few episodes of the new series.

It is going to be difficult to fill the shoes of Andy Whitfield plus the comparison, a hell of a job ahead for Liam McIntyre and the show.

Hearing Whitfield's words and lines coming out of McIntyre's mouth just makes me miss Andy all the more from the trailer. I have nothing against McIntyre, but that's just how I'm reacting to this trailer.
