FX Orders 13 Episodes of Billy Crystal and Josh Gad as Comedians

The world's greatest comedian Billy Crystal is returning to television! FX has ordered The Comedians, starring the man who once met Sally, to series for a 13-episode first season. Crystal hasn't been a regular on television since the late-'70s sitcom Soap.

The Comedians will star Crystal as an aging comedian who stars on a late-night sketch show with an edgy new underling played by Josh Gad (1600 Penn, The Book of Mormon). I'd say there's a one-million-percent chance that they'll butt heads and scream at each other. Stephanie Weir, Matt Oberg, and Megan Ferguson round out the cast.

The new series also marks the return of Larry Charles to television. The Curb Your Enthusiasm and Seinfeld writer will write and produce the series along with Burn Notice's Matt Nix and Community's Ben Wexler.

Billy Crystal is great, Josh Gad is generally unbearable as he sweatily overdoes everything. Gad has a few beats that actually do work, but they get lost behind his rather overbearing comedic instincts, so he ends up being the proverbial nails on the chalkboard wherever he goes (I can't speak for the stage yet, I haven't seen him there). And then there's Billy Crystal himself, who is a great talent but is a little stuck behind the times in his comedic approach.

If the show has a strong director and producer, I could see this working; but less than perfect writing, directing, production, and it's going to end up feeling like a misfit.

me LOVES Mr. Crystal. I'm really excited about this.

Is this going to be an edgy, boundary pushing comedy like FX is known for or will it be more 90 episode committments a la Charlie Sheen and ugh... George Lopez.

  • ryntan Mar 20, 2014

Are you familiar with Larry David? He's not reached 100 episodes on Curb Your Enthusiasm in 15 years. Plus, it states 13 episodes.

  • JT_Kirk Mar 20, 2014

He means in style, not specific episode count.

  • ryntan Mar 21, 2014

Yeah that's why I asked about Larry David. I guess it could have been more specific, but I doubt he's about to start churning out Anger Management 2. Plus, I'd say it's pretty safe to say at this point that FX's own 'broad' comedy push seems to only apply to 10/90 deals for now.

This is Hollywood, there's always time to sell out.

"Crystal hasn't been a regular on television since the late-'70s sitcom Soap."

    Unless you count SNL.

Live sketch TV isn't regular television.

  • JT_Kirk Mar 20, 2014

    ... anymore.

  • DavidJackson8 Mar 19, 2014

I guess it has a chance to be okay, but for now... euw.

  • MarlboroMagpi Mar 19, 2014

The mention of Josh Gad already turns me off.

  • Bottron Mar 19, 2014

I had the exact opposite reaction. Josh Gad is the only thing that is making me interested.

I have no opinion on Billy Crystal, he's alright but was before my time.. however I have never liked Josh Gad, soooooo..... I won't be watching this.

  • dodge_hickey Mar 21, 2014

City Slickers is all you need dude!

  • Mate Mar 19, 2014

No please. Stick with the good stuff like The League, Archer, Louie, and Sunny in Philly. Stay away from past their prime actors and comedians like Sheen, Lopez etc. You guys are generally on the leading edge of comedy, why regress?

  • ben45tpy Mar 19, 2014

So it's not a 10/90 situation? Thank God.

  • dodge_hickey Mar 19, 2014

Larry Charles, Billy Crystal and Matt Nix have me excited. Not a big fan of Josh Gad though..

  • JT_Kirk Mar 20, 2014

Good eye on Matt Nix, that slipped past me. He's great.
