The CW Orders The Originals to Series, Renews Beauty and the Beast and Hart of Dixie

Sometimes, you just scratch your head and move on. That was certainly my reaction to the following news: The CW has renewed Beauty and the Beast and Hart of Dixie for Seasons 2 and 3, respectively, and also given a series order to The Vampire Diaries spin-off The Originals. They join Supernatural, Arrow, and The Vampire Diaries on the list of shows confirmed to be returning to The CW for the 2013-2014 TV season.

It appears that "good enough" is the motto of the broadcast networks year. Both Beauty and the Beast and Hart of Dixie have been gutted by critics and are struggling to post 1.5 million viewers weekly (Hart of Dixie only hit the mark four times this season). But with only Arrow, Supernatural, and TVD actually earning (mostly) their keep, The CW needed to renew something

The quick series pickup of The Originals comes the day after its backdoor pilot debuted as an episode of The Vampire Diaries, even though the well-publicized premiere was a slumber party away from a series low in total viewers and was a bit disappointing, according to our own Cory Barker. Still, The CW apparently would rather take its chances with a new series that can sucker in a built-in audience. They might be overestimating things, if you ask me.

The pickups mean The CW has programmed six of its 10 hours next season, with a seventh probably going to America's Next Top Model. The CW has eight pilots in contention as well as decisions to make regarding Nikita and The Carrie Diaries and whatever stupid reality programs it can come up with (anyone remember Remodeled?). Optimistically, there are five spots available, taking midseason series and backup options into account.

Personally, I like The CW's strategy of becoming a genre channel for young adults, and bringing back Hart of Dixie and Beauty and the Beast definitely hinders the chances for the network's cool-sounding sci-fi pilots. Doesn't The CW know we all want to see The Hundred?

So glad both of these are being continued. Love beauty and the beast, and while Hearts of Dixie is so different, I love it too, especially Summer, from the OC

    Aaaawwwwwwwweeeee yeah!

Beauty and the Beast was slow to start, but after witnessing the developing relationship between the Cat and Vincent with the backdrop of corruption at in the precinct and Evan's involvement with Muirfield, I am officially hooked. This show if very underrated, and although it won't be bringing in any awards anytime soon, it certainly offers enough romance and suspense to keep one entertained for an hour. Its renewal, despite everything I've read on every website (this one included), is a delightful surprise. :-)

Hart of Dixie, on the other hand, has been keeping the same pace two seasons strong. It started out as quaint and enjoyable as the most recently aired episode, and every hour has brought more reasons to smile. The writing is incredibly entertaining, the characters are unique and incredibly likeable, and the casting couldn't possibly be better. I would've been crushed had this small-town show with loads of charm been cancelled, for it is exactly what the light-hearted romantic comedy buff within me yearns for and is most happy to enjoy on a weekly basis.

Thank you for keeping all of my favorite shows, CW! Along with Arrow, Supernatural, and The Vampire Diaries, you remain my go-to network for quality programming. (Note how I didn't mention my love for America's Next Top Model or any given reality show...the exact opposites of quality.)

they need to make a justice league type show...i can't help my love for superhero shows with hot men

I can't believe that I have to write my comment all over again, wtf...anyway...after much consideration I have decided to change my mind and give the Originals a chance, as long as they kill the Marcel character off asap...I have nothing to say about the HOD because I have never watched it and I might give it a chance though, as long as it doesn't drive me up a wall...I still miss Smallville, which is probably stupid but oh well. I am still upset that TSC got cancelled, cuz I liked that show. And I watched The Carrie Diaries and wasn't impressed. I am happy that Supernatural got renewed because I love Sam and Dean. I am hoping that The Vampire Diaries improves, considering that it got renewed, because season 4 has been a slow train wreck in my opinion...I have watched Arrow, and am still in the huh phase..I tried watching Beauty and the Beast and I am going to wait for it to come out on DVD before I give the 2nd season a chance, so I can watch it my way. I am done rambling for now...

I don't have a TV so I don't watch shows until I can watch them on Hulu or online. So How do those rating factor in? I pretty much use my laptop as my tv. Why bother paying for Cable when I can get my shows on Hulu!
