"There Are Going To Be Changes" In Game of Thrones, Emilia Clarke Teases

It’s hard to believe that before Game of Thrones Emilia Clarke had little on-screen experience. Her character Daenerys Targaryen has undergone one of the biggest transformations of the series so far--from unsettled sister to nurturing Queen. It’s propelled her from obscurity to an international star. But what more can we expect from the growing tribal Queen? And was this a tough first role? We caught up with Clarke to find out...

This is one of your first acting roles. What a role to get!
Emilia Clarke: I know, it's amazing. I couldn't have dreamed for a better role. I spent most of my life watching HBO series wishing that at some point in my career I might be able to work with them. Having the opportunity so young is kind of awesome.

Did it come as a shock?
Yeah. You can't come out of drama school and think, “It's all going to be amazing”. You have to expect to work in a bar for at least five years and be a waitress for maybe two! So it was a massive shock--a really good one though.

How did you find the sex scenes?
I love this question so much! You know, as a young actress, it's not really your favourite thing, but you just get so into the character you forget about it completely. HBO's tasteful, it's not like it's anything I'd be worried about, so it was absolutely fine. It's not really what I concentrated on.

What was it like learning the Dothraki language?
There's an incredible person who made up the entire language--it's got verbs, it's got everything. But it wasn't a matter of us learning that, it was more us mapping the English onto the Dothraki lines.

The novel on which the show is based is very popular, does that put extra pressure on you?
You want to do the fans proud because there are so many of them and it's such a popular book. You want to do the best job you can, but I think that's what we've done. I think we've followed the book really, really well. So hopefully they'll just be really, really happy.

Keeping up with the book can be difficult because of all the different names and characters. Did you find that with the scripts?
The way the script is written makes it much more accessible than the book itself because we're showing it to you as opposed to you having to follow it in words. And our amazing acting as well!

Your character Daenerys was very timid at the start, but she seems much stronger now. How much further can we expect her to develop?
There are going to be changes, definitely, but you have to watch the episodes to find out! She definitely doesn't stay timid forever.

Game of Thrones continues on Sky Atlantic at 9pm on Mondays.
