What to watch on Saturday, August 23...

Doctor Who
Chris Hardwick and Mark Gatiss warm up to the season premiere with a live pre-show, including behind-the-scenes footage. Then at 8:15pm, “Deep Breath” inaugurates Peter Capaldi’s tenure as the Twelfth Doctor in Victorian London, where a dinosaur is running amok and a series of spontaneous combustions are devastating the city.

9pm, Starz
“The Way Out” finds Claire quitting Castle Leoch thanks to her medical skills, and I can only assume this involves her wielding a stethoscope like nunchucks with deadly ferocity. In a more traditional application of her training, Claire also cares for an ill child along with Jamie’s help.

9pm, AMC
Hell on Wheels
Cullen gets a handle on difficulties both at home and on the railroad in “Reckoning.” Meanwhile, Campbell maneuvers against Durant and Mickey.

10pm, Logo
Don’t Trust the B---- in Apartment 23
After Pepper sets Mark up on a date in “Using People,” June struggles to understand how she really feels about him. Meanwhile, James guns for a role in Martin Scorsese’s next film, and June learns that Chloe has been hitting up AA meetings for less than constructive purposes.

Mira Sorvino and John Simm star in this supernatural thriller from X-Files veteran Glen Morgan, in which a secret society takes up body transference as a route to immortality. “She Was Provisional” opens the eight-episode series with a woman’s mysterious disappearance and a young girl’s suddenly unnerving behavior.

What to watch on Sunday, August 24...

Teen Wolf
Assassins about in "Monstrous," stealthily targeting Satomi's tribe outside of the show's usual time slot. Can Scott and Kira counter their trickery, or will they be too distracted waiting to see what Lady Gaga will be wearing to the VMAs?

True Blood
“Thank You” wraps the series with Sookie considering a Bill-less future, Eric and Pam taking on a new endeavor, Andy claiming an inheritance, Sam settling into his new life, Sarah paying the piper, and TV recappers across the English-speaking world heaving a humungous sigh of relief to finally be free of this lunacy.

9pm, MTV
2014 MTV Video Music Awards
Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj, and Maroon 5 are among those slated to rock the proverbial house at the 31st annual ceremony, live from The Forum in Inglewood, CA. Beyoncé (who's also scheduled to perform) and Iggy Azalea lead the field with eight nominations each.

This three-part drama set in 1961 centers on the obstetrics ward at a London hospital, where a brilliant doctor (Jack Davenport) juggles professional rivalries and a complicated romantic life. In the opener, a new nurse catches his eye even as he lands in the sights of a police inspector.

SEASON 1 FINALE, 9pm, BBC America
The Musketeers
A schism threatens to destroy the gang after Athos takes Milady hostage and discovers that D'Artagnan knows her. Meanwhile in “Musketeers Don’t Die Easily,” the Cardinal seeks to eliminate his foes, fretting that his plot against the Queen will come to light.

9pm, Lifetime
Witches of East End
Friend of the family Tarkoff (James Marsters) calls on Joanna and Freddie, while Killian questions his feelings for Eva. Elsewhere in “Art of Darkness,” Wendy runs into someone from her past when she, Freya, Ingrid, and Dash take in an art gala.

The Last Ship
“No Place Like Home” finds Chandler and his crew returning from their voyage. But their homecoming isn’t all dispensing souvenirs and cleaning out totally full DVRs: There’s a diabolical warlord on the loose, warlording up a storm in the frightening new world.

10pm, TNT
Falling Skies
Tom and the 2nd Mass have a cunning plan to wipe out the Espheni power core in “Drawing Straws.” Step one: Learn to pilot a Beamer. Step two: Become a Beamer hotshot, quickly grow cocky and dismissive of your fellow pilots. Step three: Beach volleyball!

10pm, Showtime
Masters of Sex
In “Asterion,” Masters nixes his work with Johnson after his, er, little assistant refuses to show up for work, if you get my drift. In another kind of performance problem, Masters’ new clinic is on thin financial ice.

10pm, WGN America
Frank and Charlie butt heads after an investigation targets Babbit in “A New Approach to Quantum Cosmology.” Fun fact: I was once drummed out of Science Club for proposing a new approach to quantum cosmology, because they claimed that “putting sriracha on it” didn’t count as an approach, and that “nachos” didn’t count as quantum cosmology. Short-sighted fools.

10pm, HBO
The Leftovers
Kevin pursues a rampaging deer, Nora pursues a new job, and Tom pursues his past. Meanwhile in “The Garveys at Their Best,” Laurie receives fateful news and Kevin’s father receives an accolade.

10pm, FX
The Strain
In “For Services Rendered,” Setrakian, Eph, and Nora use Jim in a plot to bait the Master... which I guess makes them Master-bai—[is yanked away by giant Vaudeville stage hook].

And now, let’s all vote to crown the What to Watch Tonight Episode Title of the Week!
