Which TV Catchphrases and Quotes Do You Regularly Use in Everyday Life?
On any given day, it's fairly likely that you'll hear me mutter the word "Frak!" when I screw something up or walk into a wall. I've been known to throw out "What'chu talkin' 'bout, Willis?" if someone says something that confuses me. And I'm basically an honorary member of the Dillon Panthers now, based simply on how often I manage to work "Clear eyes, full hearts!" into everyday conversation.
Catchphrases and particularly repeatable quotes are one of the easiest ways for TV to make its way into our everyday lives and the pop culture lexicon, and we're all guilty of using them at one point or another. Maybe Battlestar Galactica's favorite curse word didn't start out as anything special, but once you've heard it in action, don't be surprised if it becomes a welcome addition to your vocabulary. Below, I've listed six lines that I regularly use in my own life. Share YOUR favorite cribbed-from-TV quotes and phrases in the comments!
"Oy with the poodles already!"
Leave it to Gilmore Girls to create a catchphrase by having a character discuss creating a catchphrase. And then never use that catchphrase again.
"Cool. Cool, cool, cool."
There's something special about Abed's catchphrase on Community that makes everything seem so much, well, cooler.
"You got it, dude!"
Michelle Tanner's signature line on Full House is right up there with Uncle Joey's "Cut it out," but requires much less hand-and-mouth coordination.
How I Met Your Mother's Barney Stinson gifted the world with many things, including the Hot/Crazy Scale, the Playbook, and the Bro Code. He also singlehandedly brought back high-fives and created the equally great "It's gonna be legend—wait for it—dary!" catchphrase, but I prefer the simpler (and shorter) request of "Suit up!"
"How very dare you!"
If you don't already use this one, I think you'll find that Derek's catchphrase from The Catherine Tate Show is highly applicable to everyday life.
"I say good day!"
Just don't let Fez hear you stealing his go-to line.
