TV.com's Swell-o-vision vs. Hell-o-vision (August 12)

There were plenty of renewals to get excited about this week, but there was also the premiere of Bachelor Pad. Let's call it a wash. Here's what we thought was out of sight and just not right on television this week...

Swell:

... Melanie's win on So You Think You Can Dance
It's amazing that a frontrunner who more or less dominated the entire season could come out on top—WAY on top—and yet the news still felt exciting and surprising. While it's too bad there couldn't be a two-way tie with equally awesome Sasha, all in all Melanie's win capped off another terrific season of TV's best reality competition.

... This animated GIF from last Sunday's True Blood
True Blood Ginger Coffin GIF

... Jon Benjamin Has A Van enjoyed a visit from Saul Goodman
Bob Odenkirk (Mr. Show, Breaking Bad) worked overtime in the season finale of the quirky Comedy Central show. It was nice to see him doing something other than laundering meth money.

... Misfits is on Hulu
We know it's been available for a few weeks now, but the British series about kids with powers is everything Heroes should have been (with a little Skins thrown in). Plus, we've already spied Pyp and Catelyn from Game of Thrones in it!

... More thick tension on Breaking Bad
It was withheld mostly until the final moments of last Sunday's episode, but we have to know: WHAT ARE THEY DOING WITH JESSE!?!?!

... Curb in the Hall
Two of the funniest guys we can think of—Curb Your Enthusiasm's Jeff Garlin and Kids in the Hall's Bruce McCulloch—are teaming up for a new, half-hour sitcom for ABC Studios.

Hell:

... Bachelor Pad
Is the show supposed to signal the end of Western Civilization? Feuding Vienna and Jake used the three-hour premiere to continue their PR chess game, using the dimmest of hunks as their pawns. Ugh. We can't wait 'til next week!

... Rebecca Black was on America's Got Talent
Here appearance was proof that America doesn't actually care about talent. Every time her voice goes flat, a talented child's dreams die. Though we'll at least give her credit for not lip-synching.

... Watching the news
Fiery riots, plummeting economies, starvation. This week totally sucked for the planet and made us miss those time-killing videos of dogs playing dead that CNN continually runs on slow news days.

... Syfy's renege on Eureka
Seriously, dude. You don't renew a show and then change your mind and cancel it. That's just messed up.

... The new Futurama continues to disappoint
Is it just us? This latest season isn't even close to the quality of the original run. Futurama, you've Simpsons'd yourself.

What made your list of TV loves and hates this week?

Misfit is the best show right on right now. It's what scifi shows should be like

  • HPMAE Aug 18, 2011

Every time I turn to Syfy I think, it's not science (professional wrestling) and it's not fiction (Ghost Hunters). And although professional wrestling is probably more physics than sports and Ghost Hunters is probably more fiction than fact, in the end, it's not really what I had in mind.

I do like Alphas. Please don't cancel it like you do all the other Scifi shows. Perhaps the channel should stop portraying themselves as science fiction.

Wow thank you so much for mentioning Misfits. Watched all of them, and it's one a my new favorites. I'd suggest all of you check it out. Fantastic show.

    Syfy sucks now.

I laugh so hard when I saw Ginger in that scene with Pam. Priceless.

She deserves more screen time, even she is screaming everytime.

What I realized today >> Syfy is to Sci fi channel what tru tv is to court tv. They took two perfectly fine channels and turned them into a pile of spoiled meat. Thanks for nothing

Totally agree with new Futurama being Simpsons'd. I quit on Simpsons years ago, quit on Futurama this 2011. They used to be comedy, now they're just parodies, and noone does parodies better than Family Guy and American Dad, at least animated. It's a shame, because they were quality TV once upon a time (probably we have FG and AD themselves to blame for the decadence of The Simpsons and Futurama, when the latter started to compete with the former, they committed suicide)

I don't get the execs at SyFy. I understand the cancellation of Caprica (even though IMO it was the finest sci-fi concept in TV history), yet I can't understand the cancellation of their two bread-and-butter shows, Stargate and Euerka. What exactly are their motives? If you don't want to do sci-fi-- fine-- but then why premier the stellar sci-fi Alphas? Alphas could have reinvigorated the network, yet their executive decisions cast a pretty large shadow on its creativity. I am excited for Blood and Chrome though (although the sci-fi paradigms will obviously take a hit), so right now SyFy is mixed a bag. Are there any new sci-fi shows coming to SyFy this fall?

Eureka is a great show.. if syfy needs to cancel a show, pls cancel Haven.. that show is unwatchable boring to the max..
