Watch the First Trailer for HBO's The Newsroom (VIDEO)

One upcoming show that's really caught my ear is HBO's The Newsroom, a drama about a 24-hour cable news network from The Social Network writer Aaron Sorkin. The likes of CNN and Fox News have devolved into partisan name-calling and videos of water-skiing squirrels, so what better way to expose the industry's shortcomings than with Sorkin's trademark long-winded monologues and walk-and-talks?

HBO has finally released a trailer for the series, which as of today also has an official premiere date: June 24. Details of the series have been kept quiet, so this trailer does a whole lot more than just show us what Olivia Munn looks like in a "real" job. Jeff Daniels plays a fed-up lead anchor for a fictional news network, and here we see him lose it on a college-campus tour.

With its control rooms, headsets, and fiery behind-the-camera drama, The Newsroom looks an awful lot like one of Sorkin's previous works, the good but short-lived SportsNight. That's a good thing.

Aaron Sorkin, Jeff Daniels on HBO? I have officially wet my pants with joy.

This looks really good! I don't know why I sound surprised, but I'm definitely giving this one a shot.

Cannot wait for this! It's too bad that SportsNight and Studio 60 had to end so early, but it's good to see yet another show from Aaron Sorkin. Hopefully HBO will keep this one going!

Looks good. About time there was someone with intelligence in the newsroom.

Really? This reminds you of Sports Night? It's almost completely similar to Studio 60 with the meltdown.

  • JolarEQ Apr 03, 2012

It looks very much like SportsNight. Just because the "meltdown" is similar to Studio 60, does not mean that they show itself is not like SportsNight.

What if we said it looked a little like West Wing, too? Would you jump all over that?

    Sundays are HBO.

    ...and AMC

  • FringeFanatic Apr 02, 2012

Yep. I'm not even going to refer to the day after Saturday as "Sunday" anymore. If someone asks me what I'm doing over the weekend, I'll be like, "Oh, you know, I'll try to get some housework done on Saturday. And on 'HBO' I'll probably just relax and watch some TV."

This is fantastic!!!! Too many new favorite shows!!!! TV is going to be the death of me, but I can't wait for this!!!!! Aaron Sorkin and HBO= GOLD!!

My new favourite series. But then, given the number of times I've mentioned Aaron Sorkin's name on this website, that probably doesn't come as a surprise to anyone. The opening pitch there is very reminiscent of the opening to "Studio 60". Look it up, it's a fantastic monologue. Also got a little bit of Chayevsky's "Network" in there, too. And, as Tim said, looks like "SportsNight". And that is a VERY good thing. Also, HUGE fan of Emily Mortimer and I watched "Law & Order" from its inception to its ending and can always use some Jack McCoy.
