Jan 01, 2014

What to watch on Wednesday, January 1...

11am Eastern, ABC
The Tournament of Roses Parade
Grand Marshal Vin Scully leads the 125th annual New Year’s Day festivities. The theme of this year’s traipse through Pasadena is “Dreams Come True.”

1pm Eastern, NBC
NHL 2014 Winter Classic
The National Hockey League’s annual outdoor match pits the Toronto Maple Leafs against the Detroit Red Wings at the Big House, the University of Michigan’s 100,000-plus-seat football stadium in Ann Arbor, MI.

Live, 2:30pm Eastern, and 8pm, PBS
Great Performances
The Vienna Philharmonic, under the direction of Daniel Barenboim, rings in the New Year with compositions from the Strauss family and their contemporaries. Julie Andrews returns for her fifth outing as host of the annual festivities from the Austrian capital’s Musikverein.

5:07pm Eastern, ESPN
2014 Rose Bowl
Stanford and Michigan State meet in the 100th installment of the iconic college football contest.

SEASON 4 PREMIERE, 9pm, Lifetime
Dance Moms
In a special Wednesday night premiere before the series shifts to Tuesdays at 9pm next week, Abby shakes up the team by holding open-call auditions nationwide.

SERIES PREMIERE, 10pm, Lifetime
Kim of Queens
Lifetime's press release informs me that host Kim Gravel is one of the most successful pageant coaches in the business, and I’m just going to take its word for that. Presumably her rep is better known to the young women who receive her expert guidance in the ways of presentation and poise in this new series, which also moves to Tuesday nights next week.

SERIES PREMIERE, 10pm, Discovery
Lone Target
Joel Lambert has a decade of Navy SEAL experience under his belt. But will that be enough to help him elude crack military and law enforcement tracking teams from around the world? That’s the question asked in this series, which opens with Lambert matching wits with the South Africa-based International Anti-Poaching Foundation

10pm, TV Land
The Exes
Stuart’s sister (Leah Remini) arrives in “Nothing in Common” and promptly drops a bombshell about her marriage. Elsewhere, Phil and Eden debate inviting a guest star of their own into the boudoir.

10:30pm, TV Land
In “The Girl Next Door,” Kathy Griffin considers moving into the penthouse across the hall. Naturally, this sends Maddie right into a tizzy about losing her crown as the building’s biggest celebrity.

The blank spot on the left next to the Rose Parade is The Exes, which usually works. And I actually am watching the Rose Parade on KTLA 5, not ABC.
