What to Watch This Weekend: Game of Thrones, Mad Men, and Veep

By Price Peterson

May 25, 2012

We did it! Our Memorial Day weekend has arrived! But instead of high-fiving for an hour straight like I WANT TO, let's just calmly reflect on what's on TV instead. But with the full knowledge that this is a hypothetical exercise because let's go outside and stay outside all weekend! Anyway, yeah:

What to watch on Friday, May 25...

9pm, HBO
The Ricky Gervais Show
In my opinion the conversational nonsense of this animated podcast always makes for pleasant Friday evening viewing. You know? Just kick back and soak up the yammerings of Karl Pilkington and expert prodders Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant! Tonight's episode, "The English," details Karl's views on what it means to be an Englishman and why Karl wishes he could be Italian instead. Never thought I'd be saying this, but I'm with Karl on this one.

Insane or Inspired?
Tonight Syfy gets in on the viral video showcase craze with this clip show highlighting the weird and occasionally amazing feats of ordinary flip-cam owning citizens. Tonight's topic is "25 Wildest Homebrewed Superheroes." Did YOU and your colander helmet make the cut? Tune in!

Paul Simon's Graceland Journey: Under African Skies
Everyone knows that Graceland is a great album (ask your dad if you don't believe me!), but a lot of people might not know how controversial it was at the time. Apparently Paul Simon violated a U.N. boycott of South African apartheid by making this record? Who knew! (Well, your dad probably did.) So if any of that sounds interesting to you, A&E;'s got your number!

10pm, FX
The Ultimate Fighter Live
Tune in tonight for the semifinal bouts before next week's final matchup! It's sure to be a face-punching good time.

America's Most Wanted, 9 p.m., Lifetime
Primetime: What Would You Do?, 9 p.m., ABC
Tyler Perry's House of Payne, 9 p.m., TBS
20/20, 10 p.m., ABC
Dateline NBC, 10 p.m., NBC
Embarrassing Bodies, 10 p.m., Discovery Fit & Health
Real Time with Bill Maher, 10 p.m., HBO
The Half Hour: Brendon Walsh & Nick Vatterott, 11 p.m., Comedy Central

Bill Hader & Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, 12:37 a.m., NBC
Colin Powell on Tonight Show with Jay Leno, 11:34 p.m., NBC

What to watch on Saturday, May 26...

8pm, CBS
How To Be a Gentleman
Y'all into zombies? This particular undead abomination is being exhumed so that CBS can burn off its remaining unaired episodes. On the bright side, it DOES feature the comedic talents of Dave Foley, Mary-Lynn Rajskub, and Rhys Darby, so it has THAT going for it. The first of two new episodes involves Andrew and Bert both getting involved with the same woman; the second involves Bert's discovery of a ton of Andrew's unsent emails that he wrote while angry.

Super Shark
I mean, who even knows what this could be about. It's a mystery! What's not a mystery is that this movie's cast includes Jimmie "J.J." Walker. We're gonna need a bigger DVR!

9pm, NBC
The Firm
The fact that this show has been essentially cancelled for the past 14 of its 18 episodes means that somebody's probably in a lot of trouble at NBC. WHO ordered a full season of this thing? Anyway, in "Chapter 18," Mitch finds himself defending an unstable novelist against a murder charge. Or whatever.

Suze Orman Show, 9 p.m., CNBC
Bizarre E.R., 10 p.m., Discovery Fit & Health

What to watch on Sunday, May 227...

Harry's Law
Pre-emptions, mix-ups, coups. Really, there could be TONS of reasons why the Harry's Law series finale might not have aired in your territory last week like it should've. Luckily here it is again! In tonight's series finale episode, Harry is rattled when her ex-husband is found dead!

9pm, HBO
Game of Thrones
Westeros goes to war in "Blackwater," an episode Tim Surette has seen and calls the best episode of the season. Do you REALLY want to miss it? Question is rhetorical, of course you don't.

9pm, AMC
The Killing
Many accounts claim that The Killing has been back on track lately, and "72 Hours" hopes to continue that trend. Tonight Sarah finds herself at her wit's end while Stan attempts some damage control of his own. Meanwhile your #1 favorite subplot, the mayoral race, finds Richmond getting a surprise boost! Who, oh WHO will win this mayoral race??

10pm, AMC
Mad Men
The thing about AMC's episode synopses is that they always understate their shows' plotlines. For example, here's what they say about "The Other Woman": "Don deals with a challenging pitch, while Peggy ponders taking a trip." We all know the episode will be more complex and entertaining than these teases suggest, AMC! Get real!

10pm, HBO
In "Baseball," Selina kicks off her anti-obesity campaign with a function at Baltimore's Camden Yards but she runs into problems with some powerful fast food executives. Meanwhile Dan and Amy have to entertain some antsy elementary school students before Selina arrives. This show is real good, P.S.

10:30pm, HBO
In the promisingly titled "Welcome to Bushwick a.k.a. The Crackcident," Shoshanna accidentally smokes crack at a party (!) and Hannah is torn when she witnesses Adam being a social butterfly with other girls. Not the titular girls. Randoms.

60 Minutes, 7 p.m., CBS
Dateline NBC, 7 p.m., NBC
Mob Wives, 8 p.m., VH1
American Ninja Warrior, 9 p.m., G4
Food Network Star, 9 p.m., Food Network
Keeping Up With the Kardashians, 9 p.m., E!
Mermaids: The Body Found, ORIGINAL SPECIAL, 9 p.m., Animal Planet
Mob Wives Chicago, SERIES PREMIERE, 9 p.m., VH1
Sister Wives, 9 p.m., TLC
Mrs. Eastwood & Company, 10 p.m., E!
NYC 22, 10 p.m., CBS
The Pitch, 11 p.m., AMC
Loiter Squad, 11:30 p.m., Cartoon Network
Metalocalypse, 12:15 a.m., Cartoon Network
The Eric Andre Show, 12:30 a.m., Cartoon Network

And today I'll be watching the Eurovision Song Contest 2012

  • BenedictXVI May 27, 2012

    And the Winner is:

  • dark7angel May 27, 2012

I was really glad Sweden won! Loved the song!!! But I think it's really sad that UK's song (which was great) got so few votes and some crappy songs like Turkey's got so many...

But overall, I think this year we had a great Eurovision, with a bunch of really good songs, lots of variety and great voices!

  • BenedictXVI May 26, 2012

Saturday: Eurovision Song Contest 2012 live from Baku, Azerbaijan

    Friday: Cartoon Planet

    Saturday: Young Justice: Invasion

One question: What's up with some of you answering "Nothing"?

  • slayme3 May 27, 2012

Young Justice: Invasion has been excellent. I wish they would re-air it during the evenings - not really necessary with DVR but I'm not a kid and I LOVE this show.

  • JT_Kirk May 26, 2012

    Friday: Craig Ferguson.

Saturday: CARTOON DAY! Thundercats, Young Justice, Transformers Prime. You'll put "How to be a Gentleman" in the spotlight but not new cartoons? FOR SHAME!

    Sunday: Metalocalypse.
