What to Watch Tonight: The Mid-season Premiere of White Collar, the Season Finale of Parenthood, and the Series Finale of Private Practice
What to watch on Tuesday, January 22...
SERIES PREMIERE (Part 1), 8pm, ABC
If you’ve ever wished for a show that was like The Voice but with canapés, then bon appétit. Twenty-nine chefs audition for 16 slots on this new reality-competition series by demonstrating their culinary mettle to four celebrity-chef judges in a blind taste test.
Pioneers of Television
Primetime soaps are spotlighted, from the groundbreaking Peyton Place to the luxury-swaddled 1980s heyday of Dallas, Dynasty, and Knots Landing. Interviewees include Joan Collins, Patrick Duffy, Donna Mills, and the late Larry Hagman.
8pm, ABC Family
Pretty Little Liars
Hanna and Emily suspect an ulterior motive at work when Meredith tends to an ill Aria in “Misery Loves Company.” Because when betting on duplicity vs. beneficence as anyone’s driving impulse on Pretty Little Liars, take duplicity plus the points every time.
Terrell Owens guest-stars as veteran NFL wide receiver Terrell Owens in “Comeback Player of the Year,” helping Steven and Mr. K teach Ryan a valuable lesson. The episode summary doesn’t specify what kind of lesson, so let’s just assume it’s about running a post route against nickel coverage on third-and-long at midfield. [The “The More You Know” comet sails overhead.]
SERIES FINALE, 10pm, ABC
ABC commemorates the Circle of TV Life, following the debut of one show with the coda of another. Private Practice says goodbye in “In Which We Say Goodbye,” possibly with a full cast rendition of “Time to Say Goodbye” from The Mickey Mouse Club to really drive the point home. Addison’s wedding prompts Naomi’s return, while Cooper adjusts to being a stay-at-home dad and Violet takes on a meaningful new project.
SEASON 4 FINALE, 10pm, NBC
“Because You’re My Sister” closes out Season 4 loaded for bear: Kristina prepares for her next round of treatment, Jasmine and Crosby celebrate their anniversary, Sarah is forced to make a choice of paramour, Amber and Ryan contemplate the future, Joel and Julia plan a Braverman bash, and Drew learns the fate of his college applications. How many of these things will make you cry? Smart money says: Most.
WINTER PREMIERE, 10pm, USA
Neal’s pursuit of the truth about his father’s felonious past resumes in “Family Business.” On the case-of-the-week front, Neal and Peter go after an Irish mobster who’s counterfeiting whiskey, which if I’m not mistaken is considered a treasonous offense in Ireland.
SERIES PREMIERE, 10pm, BBC America
Wild Things with Dominic Monaghan
A new travelogue following the erstwhile Lost islander/ancillary Hobbit as he scours the globe in search of the rare and exotic fauna most likely to kill him. In the opener, Dominic ventures through Vietnam’s Mekong Delta to find a giant water bug, which I’m certain was one of the early level bosses in Contra.
