Composer Amin Bhatia has been writing, recording and programming for nearly 20 years. He originally wanted to work with an orchestra but couldn't find space for them in his basement, so settled for synthes instead.
In 1981 he won first prize in a synthe competition sponsored by Roland. The judges included Oscar Peterson, synth veterans Robert Moog and Ralph Dyck, and Japanese artist Isao Tomita. The resulting exposure launched Bhatia's music career, leading to projects with David Foster, Steve Porcaro, and a solo album on Capitol's Cinema label titled " Interstellar Suite". But it was Porcaro who convinced Bhatia to seriously get into film music.
Because early synthes could only play one note at a time Bhatia was forced to learn how each instrument of the orchestra worked, in order to simulate and record it properly. He now uses real instruments in his writing, but his days with a Roland sequencer and a Minimoog have given him an unusual insight into arranging and orchestration for real players.
Bhatia's current film projects include the IMAX feature "Jane Goodall's Wild Chimpanzees", which incorporated songs from South Africa's Johnny Clegg. A compilation CD including score and songs by Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Cockburn, and Paul McCartney was released in the fall of 2003. The score for the Nelvana animated feature film "Rescue Heroes: The Movie was created by Amin Bhatia with orchestrations and additonal music by Ari Posner and was performed by members of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. The score for Shaftesbury's MOW "In The Dark", was created by Amin with additional music by Meiro Stamm as was the music for the GFT Entertainment feature "Detention". Bhatia's score for the GFT feature " Going Back", was recorded by the Munich Symphony Orchestra. Other projects include Decode Entertainment's "King", "John Woo's Once A Thief", "Criminal Instincts" (adapted from the Joanne Kilbourne Mysteries), "The Zack Files", "Franny's Feet", "Tales from the Cryptkeeper", and "Code Name: Eternity". Feature credits also include " Iron Eagle II", " Gridlock" and " Cafe Romeo". When taking a break from music writing Bhatia does sound design for clients such as MuchMusic and CFNY 102.1.
Amin resides in Toronto with his wife, two children, and a cat that thinks it's a doberman.moreless
