  • Biography
  • The American hip-hop trio Beastie Boys are from NYC: Brooklyn and Manhattan. The main members of Beastie Boys are: Mike D aka Michael Diamond, age 40. MCA aka Adam Yauch, age 41. King Ad-Rock aka Adam Horovitz, age 39. Beastie Boys were the first successful white rap group, and in the minority of rap groups to enjoy commercial success. In 1979, the original setup was a punk band called The Young Aborigines, and after MCA joined the group, the band's name was changed to Beastie Boys. The line-up included MCA on bass, Mike D on vocals, a man named John Berry on guitar, and Kate Schellenbach on drums. Quickly, they supported bands like Bad Brains and Reagan Youth. John Berry left the group, to be replaced by Ad-Rock. In 1984, Beastie Boys turned from a punk rock band to a three-man hip hop crew, with the help of Rick Rubin. Kate Schellenbach realized the apparent creative differences between her punk rock self and her bandmates, now armed in three matching track suits, before she left the band. In 1985, Beastie Boys supported acts such as Madonna, Run DMC, and LL Cool J. They also released music in genres such as Dance, Rap, R&B, and Metal. The first album, "Licensed to Ill" came out in 1986, was a huge success; the best selling rap album of the eighties. The single '(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party)' only helped boost the success of the Beastie Boys. The album was taken on tour the following year. 1989's "Paul's Boutique", the second Beastie Boys album, revealed their recent maturity. The album uses nearly 100 samples, and is considered one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time. Due to a falling out with Def Jam records, the album failed to meet the sales of "Liscensed to Ill". "Check Your Head" was released in 1992, and included Mike D on drums, MCA on guitar, and Ad-Rock on guitar. They also featured Mark Nishita aka Keyboard Money Mark on keyboards, and Mario Caldato Jr. aka Mario C engineering the album. In 1994, "Ill Communication" topped the charts, thanks in part to the single 'Sabotage' and the accompanying Spike Jonze music video. The Beastie Boys headlined Lollapalooza, alongside the Smashing Pumpkins. The band performed three concerts in Los Angeles, NYC, and Washington, to raise money for the Milarepa fund, to raise awareness of Tibetan human rights issues and the exile of The Dalai Lama. Beastie Boys returned to NYC, to to produce the 1998 album "Hello Nasty". DJ Hurricane left the band, replaced by Mix Master Mike. "Hello Nasty" was deemed a success, with the hit 'Intergalactic', and they took the album on tour. Mike D got into a bicycle accident, cancelling the planned tour with Rage Against the Machine. After the terrorist attacks of September eleventh, 2001, Beastie Boys increased their political activism. After building their new studio in downtown Manhatten, they started work on a new album. "To The 5 Boroughs" was released in June of 2004. • MCA: You yell at a couple of people and the next thing you know you’re number one in the pop chart.

    • Mike D: I think the most important thing with this tour and with life in general is to have as much sex in public as you possibly can.

    • Mike D: The whole history of B-Boy fashion comes from some kid who co-opts something that comes from something totally different. Like the kid who puts on his grandmother’s fur hat and wears it on the subway. But because he carries it off, the next week everyone goes out and buys one.

    • Ad-Rock: The ideal Beastie fan is a 92-year-old woman with buckteeth. They slam dance a lot, and obviously we reduce the rate for OAPs. We don’t want to alienate our hardcore fans.

    • King Ad-Rock: We did this press conference and when we went into the room the photographers literally broke open doors and pushed a table over with cups and plates on. So we were just playing around with them - we threw a couple of pieces of bread and they threw them back. It was fun; like a food fight, playful. I hit a guy in the face with a piece of ham.
