  • Stana Katic was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada to Croatian Serb parents, who both emigrated from Yugoslavia. She later moved with her family to Aurora, Illinois and moved back and forth from Canada to the U.S. She graduated from West Aurora High School in 1996 and went onto study acting at Chicago's Goodman School of Drama. With the second season of ABC'sCastle being touted globally and cult comic-book movie "The Spirit" already under belt, Stana Katic is emerging as Hollywood's next film and television household name.

Canadian-born actress Stana Katic plays female lead Detective Kate Beckett in romantic dramedy Castle. Castle follows the lives of crime-thriller novelist Rick Castle (played by Nathan Fillion) and young, type-A NY Detective Beckett. The two are thrust together when a series of copy-cat murders mimic Castle's novels. Witty rapport, a clash of wills, and romance ensues, all resulting in Beckett breaking Castle's writer's block and becoming his unwilling new muse. Castle airs Mondays at 10pm on ABC.

Katic's character Beckett is the inspiration for the central character in "Heat Wave," a crime novel ghostwritten by Castle showrunners, with the ostensible author being Rick Castle himself. The cross-promotional book series is a central theme in the show and has risen to #6 on The New York Times bestseller list. For her portrayal of Kate Beckett, Stana Katic was nominated for a 2009 Satellite Award in the category of Best Actress in a Drama.

Stana's other film credits includeFeast of Love, opposite Morgan Freeman and Greg Kinnear, andStiletto with Tom Berenger.

Stana has prominent roles in some of television's most critically acclaimed shows. She recently portrayed torch singer Simone Renoir inThe Librarian: the Curse of the Judas Chalice, garnering top cable ratings. Stana's own vocals were used for the sultry theme song.

Much like her character Kate Beckett, Stana is an avid reader. She also has a strong interest in environmental issues, archery and music.moreless

    • Stana: (on her relationship with fans) I’m just an actor who’s doing a job and if people are enjoying it and want to see it, then I’m a very lucky actor, who’s doing a job.

    • Stana: (on her ethnicity) My parents are Serbs from Croatia. I call us Dalmatian because that's the part of the planet that we are originally from. I have Serb, Croat and even a handful of Montenegrin family members.

    • Stana: (on her character in Castle personality) She's a woman, which means that she's inherently strong. There are all these other wonderful facets to her, as well: hope, sometimes girlish hope; self-doubt; confidence. There's a Joan of Arc quality to her, I suppose. There are different ways of communicating with people in different scenarios. In the workplace, you can really only be one kind of person, whereas with Castle, she has to maintain a certain sense of decorum for right now, but as we move forward and he gets to know her more, we get to see her other layers.

    • Stana: (on what drives her character in Castle, Kate Beckett) She was on that typical Manhattan-ite, society girl path, then a personal tragedy struck, and she shifted course, and joined the police force to become a detective. I think she's driven by her need to see justice prevail and her empathy toward victims and their families.

    • Stana: As an actor it seems we're always living out of our suitcase, never really knowing what's next, which can be exciting, but it also can frame your life in a weird way.
