    • Nina: Tony, I need you to do something for me. Tony: For you or for Jack?

    • Mason: You have no idea what you're getting yourself into. Jack: Why don't you explain it to me. You've got five seconds.

    • Jamey: How long is this going to take? Nina: Why? Are we interrupting your social life? Jamey: At least I have one.

    • Tony: I don't know, Jack. If we start screening Palmer, they might think we're investigating him because he's black. Jack: That's because we are investigating him because he's black. That makes him the most likely target.

    • Jack: I got her password. Teri: What is it? Jack: LIFESUCKS, one word. Teri: Perfect.

    • Jack: I was thinking, we should try and remember what it was like when we were kids, y'know? Teri: It's a different... world now, Jack.

    • Jack: Are you planning on seeing my daughter tonight? Vincent: No, man, we broke up. You know that. Jack: Yeah, I want to make sure you know that.

    • Kim: So, is "she" still giving you the cold shoulder? Jack: If by "she," you're referring to your mother, I'd appreciate it if you referred to her by her name: Mom. And no, she's just busy. Kim: She's busy a lot.

    Notes (472)

    • Both Dennis Haysbert (David Palmer) and Penny Johnson (Sherry Palmer) had supporting roles in the political thriller Absolute Power which starred Clint Eastwood.

    • While Jack enters CTU for the first time, Teri asks him if Kim should see a shrink. In Season 5 Kim does just that, but the shrink instantly becomes Jack's nemesis.

    • This is the second time Kiefer Sutherland (Jack Bauer) and Xander Berkeley (George Mason) have worked together. The first time was in the 1992 movie, A Few Good Men.

    • In Season 1, the hour of 12:00 A.M. is referred to as "Midnight" in the opening blocks. In every season since, it has been referred to as "12:00 A.M." However, it is interesting to note that 12:00 P.M. is not referred to as "Noon", even in season 1.

    • Throughout Seasons 1-3, Dennis Haysbert receives the "and" credit.

    • Sarah Clarke was cast in the role of Nina Myers on the morning that this episode began shooting. The costume department didn't have time to fit her, so she wore her own clothing throughout the entire first season.

    • Presumably, this day takes place on a Tuesday, since the California primary is usually held on that day.

    • James Foley was originally tapped to direct this episode, but had to pull out at the last minute.

    Trivia (549)

    • When Jack is walking into CTU, there are splitscreen shots of him talking with his wife, yet on the close up he has the phone pinched against his shoulder with his head cocked to hold it there, while the wide shot just shows him walking normally holding the phone up to his ear with this right hand.

    • This is the episode in which the clock sound before and after the commercials is different than the sound in the rest of the episodes.

    • Mandy comes from the back of the plane to get her carry on suitcase and retreats. She is next shown changing clothes with the passengers visible through the curtain and she is in front of them.

    • Crew or equipment visible: When Jack and Richard are trying to leave the building in Dunlop Plaza, right after Jack reties a tourniquet with Richard's tie, crew members are visible to the right side of a door frame that they walk through.

    • At Dunlop Plaza, when Jack and Walsh leave the stairwell and head into the hallway, the camera follows close behind Walsh as they turn the corner. As it follows them, you can plainly see the torso of a man in a blue shirt with his arms crossed to the left of the screen along with someone's forearm. This happens just as Walsh exits the stairwell, holding out his gun in the opposite direction and before the camera whips around to Walsh and Jack. The gun blocks the face of the blue shirt man, and only the forearm of another can briefly be seen.

    • Although each hour is supposed to unfold in real-time, there are three minutes that are unaccounted for. This is due to the fact that the final three minutes of each hour are used for commercials, station ID and previews for upcoming episodes of 24.

    • When Jack calls Nina from outside the parking garage, he tells her, "I'm at 2350 Dunlop Plaza, the North Garage." However, a few seconds later Tony calls up a transcription of their conversation onto his computer screen, and there is a close of the part of the text which (incorrectly) reads, "2350 DUNLOP PLAZA THE NORTH PARKING GARAGE," even though Jack said "I'm at," before this, and he never said "parking" in front of "garage".

    • The clock on screen reads 01:44 when Keith and Nicole Palmer show up. Then, at the next scene with Teri and Alan, it reads 01:42. Since this isn't Time Bandits, the editor has assumed the latter was intended to read 01:45 and adjusted it accordingly.

    • Jack mentions when this is over the family would go on a trip to Canada, this is most likely a nod to the fact that all three actors who play Jack, Teri and Kim are Canadian.

    • Waco: Jack told Nina he did not want backup to save his family to avoid a "screw-up" like the botched government siege on the Waco, TX compound in 1993, where 76 people died.

    • Palmer: Reference to Posse Comitatus and Army and Air Force
This is in reference to a US law prohibiting the military from engaging in police like activities except by act of Congress. There is specific reference to the Army and Air Force, but not to the Marines and Navy.

    • Star Trek: In the situation room, the computer monitors are set up the same way as they are in the briefing room on the Enterprise.

    • Stephen Saunders (1947-8 June 2000) was actually the name of the British Military Attache in Athens, Greece who was murdered by the terrorist organization "November 17th". This was the organization's last victim, as its members were arrested June 2002 and subsequently convicted.

    • Tony: Failure is not an option! Tony's line echoes Gene Kranz's (Ed Harris) line from the 1995 movie Apollo 13.

    • When Don Ashton is talking to Mike Novick about Palmer being involved in the situtation, he says that he's glad that President Logan is in "good hands". • Jack's girlfriend's name is Diane Huxley. One of John Mellencamp's more famous songs is Jack & Diane.
