  • show Description
  • Sin Is In! This hit British comedy series began 1992 and remains one of the BBC's highest rated and most popular shows. Absolutely Fabulous follows the lives of three (and later four) generations of the Monsoon family and the people around them. It began as a short French & Saunders sketch with Jennifer Saunders in her familiar role as Edina and Dawn French playing her daughter. A pilot for the series was filmed with the comediennes in those respective roles but Julia Sawalha was cast to replace French. Add a dash of actress Joanna Lumley and the immensly popular and entertaining series was born. Wheel's on fire, Rolling down the road! Best notify my next of kin, This wheel shall explode!moreless

    • Eddie: Why do you have to pick on everything I do? All I want is a few little things, a few little pleasures, a few little crutches to help me get through life, darling. Saffy: Get through? Mum, you've absolved yourself of responsibility. You live from self-induced crisis to self-induced crisis. Someone does your hair, someone chooses what you wear, someone does your brain, someone tells you what to eat, and three times a week someone sticks a hose up your bum and flushes it all out of you. Eddie: Oh... It's called colonic irrigation, darling. It's not to be sniffed at.

    • Patsy: Japanese is the thing, darling - everything with a pulse is dinner.

    • Eddie: Look at Mummy, darling. Do I need surgery? Saffy: Yes... get your mouth sewn up.

    • Edina: Get on to Princess Anne's people and tell them that everyone there will be mentally ill. Tell her we'll sponsor her to wear a designer dress and make sure she realises that if she doesn't, those little children won't get anything... Press release: "Free Champagne Reception". Call Moet and Chandon and tell them it's for charity, call Joan Collins and tell her there'll be free champagne!

    • Edina: Anybody can go to the bloody toilet darling! Saffy: Well they obviously haven't seen you drunk.

    • Saffy: Well why is today such a panic anyway? It's only a fashion show and you've had six months to prepare it. I mean why is everything always so hysterical? I mean, all you've got to do is play a bit of music, turn on the lights, get some people who've thrown up everything they've ever eaten and send them down a catwalk.

    • Eddie: In zen terms we are all just molecules. There's no difference between me and the table, me and a tree, me and Madonna... Saffy: Except you have a fatter bottom.

    • Penny: Cancel Woodstock, everybody. We can play on Edina's behind!

    Notes (101)

    • The opening theme is "This Wheel's On Fire" by Julie Driscoll & Adrian Edmondson. Various artists come to sing this theme during the course of the series.

    • This was the pilot episode that would secure Absolutely Fabulous another 5 episodes. The series would stay at 6 episodes for 3 more seasons.

    • The song playing in the background during Eddy's flashback is "Sunshine Of Your Love" by Cream.

    • The lips in Eddie's dream sequence were made by the same minds that brought you Spitting Image.

    • This episode was meant to be the fourth episode, but was bumped up in the order on the advice of Dawn French.

    • All the France scenes were filmed over a period of 2 days in the middle of bad weather. All the shots you see are from when the weather finally died down.

    • This is the first episode with Saffy's friend, Sarah aka Tittikaka in it.

    • LOOK HARD: The shirt Eddie makes actually says "DLA Project" on purpose to show she didn't know what the hell Saffy was talking about.

    Trivia (68)

    • Some of the items on the kitchen table keep moving without being moved while Saffy and Eddie are talking.

    • The speaker system that informs the Monsoons that there is a visitor at their door is not present in this episode. It is there for all others.

    • When Eddie's going for a run, her necklace is hanging behind her, the camera then switches and shows her from the front, and her necklace is the right way round.

    • Eddie drops her clothes on the floor and walks to throw up some food. When she walks off camera, you can see she's still got pants on.

    • When Patsy's luggage is searched there is a paperback edition of the Judith Krantz novel Dazzle in her baggage.

    • When Saffy arrives with the food, Edina grabs it from her hands and drops a bread loaf on her way to the counter. When the wide shot comes up, the bread isn't on the floor. It too, has vanished.

    • Edina and Patsy order a bottle of champagne on the plane and put it on the table in front of them. In the next shot, the bottle has vanished.

    • Saffy probably told Eddie about the open day and the project that her friends were coming around to work on and then Eddie had the nightmare about it.

    Allusions (36)

    • Edina: You've probably got something rather interesting to listen to on Radio 4. The British radio system is divided up much the way the BBC television system is, all designated by numbers. Radio 4 is targeted toward a more educational and business oriented radio.

    • Patsy: Eddy! Rosemary's Baby has arrived with food! Patsy is referring to the 1960's movie directed by Roman Polanski where Mia Farrow's baby is the son of the AntiChrist. Since she is talking about Saffy, her feelings towards Saffy are pretty clear.

    • Gran: It's a sort of spaceage teapot, isn't it dear. A teapot to boldly go, where no teapot has gone before.
A quick and funny stab at the popular sci-fi series Star Trek.

    • Saffy: ...humping the air to Jefferson Airplane. Eddie: Its the Grateful Dead darling.
Obvious quick references to the bands Jefferson Airplane and The Grateful Dead.

    • Patsy: I connnnnnnnnnttt get nu..... satisffffacccction!
Some of the songs that Eddy and Patsy try to sing at the end of the show (aside from the theme song) include "I Got You Babe" from Sonny & Cher, and "Satisfaction" from The Rolling Stones.

    • A model of the Starship Enterprise from “Star Trek” can be seen in Saffy's room in this episode. “Star Trek” collectively refers to six science fiction television series spanning 726 episodes, ten motion pictures, and hundreds of novels, video games, and other works of fiction all set within the same fictional universe created by Gene Roddenberry in the early- to mid-1960s. Star Trek — along with Star Wars — is one of the most popular names in the history of science fiction entertainment, and one of the most popular franchises in television history.

    • Edina: I've seen Casualty, I know what goes on here.
A funny reference to what many people consider the "pre-ER" of the BBC, Casualty.

    • Eddie: Life is a mystery, everyone must stand alone. I hear you call my name and it feels like home. This is the opening verse from Madonna’s 1989 hit “Like A Prayer”. The song was the first single released from the Madonna album of the same name and is best known for its featuring of a gospel choir and for its controversial music video which attracted criticism for its use of Catholic iconography and cross burning imagery.
