Amusing... It'd be fun to see what happened next
The other reviewer is mistaken-- unless I missed a huge part. The husband doesn't suspect anything and doesn't teach his wife a lesson. The husband goes to pick up the item and rather than give it to his wife he gives her a ratty mink wrap and then she sees his secretary wearing the coat (who HE is apparently cheating on his wife with). She does learn something, though-- her husband is a cheater, too. Go get your coat back, girl! That coat was worth $8,000 in 1960's money!!moreless
However will Mrs. Bixby explain the colonel's coat to her dullard dentist husband?
Roald Dahl's story is a sort of homage to James Thurber, and takes a mildly misogynist delight in describing a skirmish in "the war between men and women" that is, for once, won by the husband. The awful Mrs. Bixby, kissed off by her lover the Colonel, takes great delight in his farewell present, a fur coat, and the thought of losing this gift concerns her far more than the loss of her lover. She devises an elaborate scheme involving a pawn ticket to explain the coat to her husband, but he, clearly knowing the truth of the situation, teaches her a lesson. A very slight story, directed with quiet skill by Hitchcock himself - milder than usual for either director or writer, but pleasing.moreless
