  • Alecia is having a great time singing with the rock band that Niki's boyfriend Ethan belongs to. The band gets a big gig opening for rock star Samantha Slinky at the Loft. Lots of record company people will be there, so Niki determines to give Ethan a rock star makeover. That starts Alecia worrying that she doesn't look the part of a rock singer. She imagines that her butt is way too big, and her delusion gets worse when her mom says she's going on a diet because the women in her family tend to get "hippy" as they age. Meanwhile, Cris and Sierra try to come up with a band name to replace "Itchy Boxers!"Alecia goes on an unnecessarily strict diet and begins almost constant exercise to lose the imagined inches off her butt. At school she almost passes out from lack of food and fatigue. Her personality is affected too, as she gets into an argument with the band and is fired and/or quits on the eve of the big gig. When she returns home, Alecia finds the girls waiting for her, along with her mother, whom they contacted out of concern for her. Mom and Niki say they think they might have contributed to Alecia's fears by talking about appearances, and the girls all agree that media images give women an impossible standard for everyone to live up to. Mrs. Alcott insists that Alecia eat, something her daughter is now ready to do. Alecia makes up with the band, given the name "Cool With Me" at the last minute, and the gig goes off successfully.moreless

  • Trivia & Quotes
  • Quotes (5)

    • Niki: This whole thing with Alecia made me realize that I owe you an apology. There's no need for you to live up to an image of some hot, fashionable, glamorous rock star. You should just be yourself. Ethan: Uh, thanks...I think.

    • Sierra: So, I don't really have calves or ankles. I have cankles.

    • Niki: This is the music business. They pay you to be crazy. Cris: Then Alecia's gonna make a fortune.

    • Cris: Hey, Aleesh, you know I'm all for training hard but you might want to take a little break between these psychotic episodes of yours.

    • Cris: This is why I never read fashion magazines. I think they spread insanity through those perfume samples.

    Notes (3)

    • Alecia performs a song called "Fly" with the band.

    • Featured Music: Tad Loves Kimberly James by Actionslacks Joan of Arc by Actionslacks This Scene's Out of Sight by Actionslacks Hottieboombalottie by KEF Love Yourself by RPS

    • Katie Weiland is listed in the credits as playing Samantha Slinky, but she doesn't appear onscreen as far as we could tell. That's too bad, because we're sure many viewers would be interested in seeing was is described in the dialogue as the character's "perfect body!" Weiland is also credited as an assistant to the producers.

    Allusions (3)

    • Ethan: Yesterday you had a headache that morphed you into Courney Love. Courney Love is a rock musician who has led a band called Hole since 1992. She's also appeared as an actress in several films. She was married to Kurt Cobian of the rock group Nirvanah for the last two years of his life. Her volatile personality and sometimes explosive temper are well-documented.

    • J.P.: See you later, Yoko. A reference to Yoko Ono, second wife of John Lennon of the Beatles from 1969 until his death in 1980. She came into Lennon's life not long before the demise of the Beatles and, rightly or wrongly, is seen by many fans as a contributing factor to the group's breakup by her influence over him.

    • Cris: When we were in the fifth grade, Niki could burp the entire theme song to Friends. Friends is of course the long-running (since 1994), highly-successful NBC sitcom. Its familair theme song is "I'll Be There for You" by the Rembrandts.
