  • show Description
  • In this seasonal anthology series, American Horror Story in the first season follows the Harmon family, a family of three who have moved from Boston to LA for a fresh start but end up living in a sinister haunted house instead. From producers Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk comes the intriguing, erotic and scary story of life within the haunted house. In the second season, the series deals with the legend of Bloody Face, who haunts a Catholic-run sanitarium in 1964. In a house of healing that is anything but, a serial killer is the least of the threats that menace residents and staff alike. In the third season, a group of witches deal with enemies from within and without as they try to survive in the modern day.moreless

    • Ben: Peeking in people's windows is still a crime, even in L.A.

    • Gynecologist: So are your periods regular again?
Vivien: Every other month. Not that I'm really complaining. After all that blood. Ben hates blood.
Gynecologist: You having issues with arousal?
Vivien: Not when I'm by myself.

    • Vivien: The light is different out here. it's softer.
      Violet: It's called smog.
Ben: You should be excited, Vi. You can stop sneaking cigarettes and just start taking deep breaths.

    • Constance: Adelaide, I put on Dora the Explorer for you, so you would sit and watch it.
Adelaide: It was Go, Diego, Go! I don't like it.
Constance: Oh, brown cartoon characters--you can't tell the difference.

    • Vivien: Can I ask you a personal question? Do you ever get tired of cleaning up other peoples' messes?
Old Moira: We're women--it's what we do. I just get paid for it.

    • Ben: You taking your medications?
      Tate: Yes.
      Ben: Any side effects?
Tate: I was taking them at night, but they kept me up.
Ben: And what did you do?
Tate: Started taking them in the morning.

    • Constance: Is there anything more wonderful than the promise of a new child... or more heartbreaking when that promise is broken?

    • Ben: What do you want?
Larry: Well.. more than anything, I guess, to be on the stage. You know what stopped me? Fear of what my family would say. But... now that they're, well, you know, dead, and, uh, I have terminal brain cancer, I figure... maybe I should just go for it, you know? Chase that dream. What about you? What dream are you chasing? Or should I say, what dream is chasing you?

    Allusions (29)

    • Violet: Great. So we're the Addams Family now.
Referencing the creepy clan later known as the Addams Family. They began with a 1938 New Yorker cartoon, whose characters frequently reappeared (and evolved) over the next several decades. In 1964, the cartoon was made into a live-action TV series. Cancelled in 1966, the series went into syndication. It was later remade (twice) as a TV cartoon series and was the subject of two theatrical movies and one direct-to-video release.

    • Patrick: Have another drink, dear. Crafting brings out his inner George and Martha.
Referencing the lead roles in Edward Albee's play, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? The characters, George and Martha, drink too much and make their guests uncomfortable. Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? was made into a film in 1966.

    • Chad: But never fear, Count Chocula's here.
Referencing Count Chocula cereal by General Mills, and the cereal's mascot. Originally voiced by Larry Kenney, Chocula is a brown-tinged vampire who hawks the virtues of his chocolate-flavored sugar cereal and marshmallow bits, and competes with Franken Berry and Bo Berry to get kids to eat his cereal instead of the others.

    • Violet: What are you, the Dead Breakfast Club?
Referencing the 1985 film The Breakfast Club, about five students, each from a different high school stereotype (Princess, Criminal, Athlete, Brain, Basketcase), who are all sentenced to Saturday detention. Stuck together in the school library, they soon bond together and overcome their preconceptions of each other.

    • Larry: Perchance to dream. For in that sleep of death, what dreams may come.
Referencing the play Hamlet (approx. 1600) by William Shakespeare. In it, Hamlet performs what is typically considered a soliloquy, the famous "to be or not to be" speech of Act Three, Scene One.

    • Patrick: Take it off, so we can watch Rachel Zoe without me without me worrying about you passing off.
Referencing Rachel Zoe Rosenzweig, aka Rachel Zoe, and her Bravo reality series, The Rachel Zoe Project. Rachel is a fashion stylist and the show documents her business and personal life.

    • Hayden: "Adieu, nightingale. Thy plaintive anthem fades."
Referencing the poem "Ode to a Nightingale" by John Keats, written in May 1819 and first published in Annals of the Fine Arts in July of that year. Hayden misquotes it slightly, as the actual line is, "Adieu! adieu! thy plaintive anthem fades."

    • Hayden: What, are you going to drag him out of here, Casper?
Referencing the animated character Casper The Friendly Ghost. Casper was first developed as a series of theatrical shorts. Casper later appeared in comic books, a few television series, and finally a full length theatrical movie.
