Quotes (8)

  • Oliver: The name of the island they found me on is Lian Yu. It's Mandarin for "Purgatory." I've been stranded here for five years. I've dreamt of my rescue every cold dark night since then. For five years I've had only one thought, one goal-- survive. Survive and one day return home. The island held many dangers. To live, I had to make myself more than what I was, to forge myself into a weapon. I am returning not the boy who was shipwrecked but the man who will bring justice to those who have poisoned my city. My name is Oliver Queen.

  • Thea: I knew it, I knew you were alive. I missed you so much.
Oliver: You were with me the whole time.

  • Tommy: A rock! That is sweet. You know, I want one of those t-shirts that says, "My friend was a castaway, and all I got is this crappy shirt."

  • Quentin: So that's your story. A guy in a green hood flew in and single-handedly took out three armed kidnappers. Who is he, why--why would he do that?
Oliver: I don't know. Find him and you can ask.

  • Oliver: Adam Hunt--his crimes go deeper than fraud or theft, but he's been able to bully, bribe, or kill anyone who's gotten into his way. He hasn't met me yet.

  • Tommy: Now by my rough estimate, you have not had sex in 1,839 days. As your wingman, I highly recommend Carmen Golden.
    Oliver: Which one is she?
Tommy: The one who looks like the chick from Twilight.
    Oliver: What's Twilight?
Tommy: You're so better off not knowing.

  • Diggle: Something I can help you with, sir?
Oliver: I just wanted a second to myself.
Diggle: I would believe you, Mr. Queen, if you weren't so full of crap.

  • Tommy: Dinah Laurel Lance always trying to save the world.
Laurel: Hey, if I don't try and save it, who will?

Notes (8)

  • Green Arrow

Green Arrow is a Golden Age hero created by Mort Weisinger and originally drawn by George Papp (in More Fun Comics #73, November 1941). Green Arrow was a wealthy millionaire in real life, had a red-costumed sidekick (Speedy, later Arsenal, who shows up over on Teen Titans), drove around in a Arrowcar and hung out in the Arrowcave. He progressed to the Silver Age, and joined the Justice League (issue #4, April/May 1961) and when he lost his own comic book, the writers stripped him of his fortune, changed his costume, had him grow a beard, and he became a new "liberal" type of 70s hero. The Earth-1 (main) Green Arrow eventually "died" and was replaced in the League by his illegitimate son Connor Hawke who took on the role of Green Arrow, but Oliver was resurrected and got a new series initially written by filmed movie director Kevin Smith. The character also appeared in the last few seasons of Smallville, although Arrow and Smallville do not share a common continuity.

  • Music: This Beats For All My Freaks (Tietso), We Are the Champions (Queen), Levels (Avicii), Party in the Dark (Jeremy Thurber)

  • The idea to create a show about Green Arrow came up while the show Smallville was being aired on the CW. Realizing Oliver Queen was such a popular character, the producers decided to give him his own show. Not wanting it to be a spin off from Smallville, they got a new actor named Stephen Amell to play him.

  • Injoke: Oliver's nickname for his sister is "Speedy," a reference to Green Arrow's sidekicks in the comic. His first sidekick, Roy Harper, took the name Speedy in the early part of his career. A child prostitute, Mia Dearden, later took the name after becoming Green Arrow's sidekick. Like Roy Harper in the comics, Thea has a drug problem.

  • Injoke: Judge Grell is named after Mike Grell, the comic book writer and artist who reinvigorated Green Arrow in 1987 by creating a three-issue mini-series, The Longbow Hunters.

  • Injoke: John Diggle is named after Andy Diggle, the comic book author who wrote Green Arrow: Year One in 2007.

  • Hatley Castle in Vancouver is used for exterior shots of the Queen Mansion. Hatley Castle has been used numerous times in television series (it was the Luthor Mansion in Smallville and the Legacy House in Poltergeist: The Legacy) as well as films (the School for the Gifted in the X-Men movies).

Trivia (2)

  • While Oliver is standing on a table at his nightclub party, he lifts a shot of tequila to his lips with his right hand. But when the angle shifts, he brings the glass down in his left hand. The angle shifts again, and the glass is back in his right hand.

  • When Oliver and Tommy are parked outside the closed Queen Industries factory, the reflection of the building in the car window still shows the sign as reading "Queen Industries" instead of a reversed reflection, as it should be.

Allusions (2)

  • Tommy: Oh, and Lost? They were all dead. I think.
Referencing the ABC TV series Lost (2004-2010). After six seasons of increasingly mysterious and supernatural events, the show ended by presenting that most of the main characters were dead. Sort of. Kind of. Maybe.

  • Tommy: The one who looks like the chick from Twilight.
Referencing the Twilight novels written by Stephenie Meyer, chronicling the adventures of Bella Swan and her romance with Edward Cullen, a 104-year-old vampire. The series was first published in 2005 and a movie adaptation of the first novel, Twilight, premiered in 2008.
