News Briefs: Oh No! Awkward. Loses Its Showrunner

By Tim Surette

Jun 27, 2013

... In arguably the worst possible news for MTV's Awkward. (the only thing more terrible would be Ashley Rickards quitting the show), showrunner and creator Lauren Iungerich is departing after the currently on-hiatus third season wraps up. MTV is likely ordering a fourth season, dependent on who they find to replace Iungerich. But Iungerich's very funny and talented voice was all over the series, and the loss of her will be, like, totally obvs. The word on her departure is that it was a combination of work and personal reasons, which sounds to me like MTV blew it. But what do I know? Maybe Iungerich just didn't want to be rich and powerful and famous anymore. [Deadline Hollywood]

... MTV has canceled Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous after one season. Well! I didn't even know the comedy starring Bo Burnham had even started. Great promotion, MTV! [THR]

... CNN has announced the return of shout-fest Crossfire, this time with co-hosts Newt Gingrich, S.E. Cupp, Stephanie Cutter, and Van Jones all making their point with volume. Look Listen for it this fall. [THR]

... TLC is going to air a British documentary about a man with 10-stone (140-pound) testicles. No date has been set yet, but you might as well record every hour of TLC until then because YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS. Why yes, I do have a trailer. [Digital Spy]

... FX is developing a TV version of the book Mohicans, which served as the source material for the film The Last of the Mohicans. The idea would be to make it a miniseries that follows the development of America as seen through the eyes of the characters from the books. [THR]

... Funny guy, Burning Love sexy fireman, and Childrens Hospital sexy Jewish doctor Ken Marino has booked a season-long arc on HBO's Eastbound & Down. This is about as perfect casting as perfect casting gets. In the comedy starring Danny McBride as a former pro baseball player, Marino will play "a middle-aged athlete who's still living the high life and partying it up." But wait, there's more! Tim Heideker, of Tim & Eric fame, will also join the series in a recurring role. He'll play a neighbor of McBride's Kenny Powers who is a painfully regular guy. [Deadline Hollywood]

... Elementary's Sherlock Holmes has an older brother, and we'll all get to meet him in Season 2. Rhys Ifans (The Amazing Spider-Man's the Lizard, Human Nature) will play Mycroft Holmes and I'm pretty convinced that he could actually be Jonny Lee Miller's real-life brother. Mycroft will appear in the premiere episode, where the two brothers will confront their recent falling-out after Sherlock heads to Jolly Old Londontown. [CBS via press release]

... In today's The Leftovers news, the show has added The Secret Circle's Chris Zylka. In the Damon Lindelof drama about those left behind after the Rapture, Zylka will play a college dropout who settles under the wing of a guru. Okay, sure. This show is sounding weirder and weirder with each detail that's released. I'm so in. [Deadline Hollywood

... TLC's Who Do You Think You Are?, which is being revived by TLC after cancellation by NBC, has announced the celebs who will let Lisa Kudrow poke around their families' pasts and talk about them on TV (minus the "your great granddad was a Nazi sympathizer" part). Here they are: Christina Applegate, Kelly Clarkson, Cindy Crawford, Zooey Deschanel, Chelsea Handler, Chris O'Donnell, Jim Parsons, and Trisha Yearwood. Who Do You Think You Are? debuts July 23 on TLC. [TLC via press release]

... 1980s dreamboat Andrew McCarthy will guest-star on CBS's summer drama Unforgettable. He'll play a rich dude who enlists Carrie's help to get his kidnapped young daughter back. [THR

... Now that our government has come to its senses and DOMA has been stricken down in the Supreme Court, Modern Family is already thinking about a marriage for Cam and Mitchell. Sure, why not? [EW]

Interesting Awkward news. I'm not going to freak out over it or anything though, Awkward's a fun show to watch, but the series has always had its flaws (maybe more so this season).

I wonder if Lauren Iungerich leaving has anything to do with the additional episodes that were ordered for the third season? This would seem to be happening a lot, with Mike Kelley leaving Revenge over it. Obviously it means twice the amount of work, and like Revenge, the quality of Awkward has been decreasing in the fans' opinions, so I could see this as being part of it. But as long as Tamara's 'voice' remains intact I'm sure whoever takes over the show will do fine in keeping in intact.

    Awkward :(

Everything that is wrong about the world is on TLC.

Who Do You Think You Are? & Finding Your Roots (PBS) are both cool and interesting. I look forward to more. :)

uggggggggggggggh first revenge and now this!!!! F.M.L.

  • Anonymous_A Jun 27, 2013

Woah, I didn't know you could comment way off the page! Totally agree with Revenge, though.

  • piranhapete Jun 29, 2013

    Neither did I. Umm, whoops...

  • PoisonedPizza Jun 28, 2013

    What about Revenge?

  • No1Slayerette Jun 29, 2013

Revenges' creator Mike Kelley won't be returning to the series when it comes back for a third season.

  • PoisonedPizza Jun 29, 2013

    Oh, IC. Thanks.

Geez that REALLY sucks for Awkward (what is it with showrunners leaving all their shows lately? Or does this happen frequently and I just never notice?). I hope they have an alternate script planned for the finale if it doesn't get picked up, which will piss me off even more. The first half of the season was pretty slow starting, but I think the second half will be a lot better. If it does get renewed, I'd just make Awkward's fourth season it's last so it can have a guaranteed shot of ending properly.

  • EsmeBuffay Jun 27, 2013

I would argue Zach Stone getting cancelled is worse news than Awkward losing it's show runner, at least it will still be on the air (likely). MTV did a piss poor job of promoting it, if more people saw it or even just knew it existed then I'm sure it would have gotten consistent rating and been picked up. Why even both producing a show if you're not going to front the cash to try and make sure it succeeds?

Mitchell and Cam getting married could be a great 5th season premire for Modern Family? It would be a very funny episode. I hope that ABC gives Modern Family the option to have a hour-long premire, and that it would feature Mitchell and Cam's wedding. It would be a hilarious episode, and way better than the fourth season premire.

  • littlebitliz Jun 27, 2013

I think it would be better if they built up to it over several episodes, though. It would be hilarious - you know Cam would make a huge deal out of everything and probably stress Mitchell out lol.

  • modernfamily120 Jun 27, 2013

Yeah, true, but that could be done in an hour long episode where throughout the episode all of that happens and then finally at the end they get married.

  • Writerpatrick Jun 27, 2013

I don't think I could take another season of "Who Do You Think You Are?." After a while it tends to cover the same stuff and much of it seems to be how some person or group abused or mistreated another. The fact is, most people in the past had dull, ordinary lives just like people do today.

  • DavidJackson8 Jun 27, 2013

I don't think I'd have the courage to have a show made about my freak testicles. That dude has some balls for doing it -_-
