  • show Description
  • Azumanga Daioh (あずまんが大王) follows the daily high school lives of six female students and two teachers with unusual personalities. From the first day of high school to their graduation, the girls will do nothing but make you laugh. Tomo Takino is the energetic “loose cannon”; Koyomi "Yomi" Mizuhara is the short-tempered, intelligent one; Chiyo Mihama is the 10-year-old genius; Ayumu "Osaka" Kasuga is the not too bright and slow one; Sakaki is the shy cat-loving, prone to cat bites one; and Kagura is the resident jock. The teachers include: Yukari Tanizaki who is the wacky, childish, English teacher and Minamo "Nyamo" Kurosawa who is the sane gym teacher that easily gets drunk. The anime, which is based on the original manga by Kiyohiko Azuma, has five different parts to each episode, each with its own title (similar to five mini-episodes put together for one big episode). They originally aired in Japan in five-minute segments, every day (Monday-Friday) with a twenty-five minute episode compiling the five five-minute episodes airing on each weekend. There are 130 sections in all, and the series fits neatly into 26 episodes.moreless

    • Osaka (to herself repeatedly): Get it together. Get it together...

    • Chiyo: (about Osaka's hiccups) I heard that it goes away if you drink while you hold your nose. Yomi: I heard that it's good if you cover your ears and drink... Tomo: Okay! Let's try both!

    • Tomo: Fried chicken, egg roll, and meat balls! A bunch of my favorites!

    • Osaka: (thinking) When I was in Osaka, others said that I was slow or that I was out of it all the time. Well I just wonder if that's true. Was I really out of it all the time?

    • N/A: School Year In Japan, the school year begins on April 1. This first semester lasts until about July 20 when summer vacation begins. The second semester begins in early September and lasts until late December. Winter break follows the second semester, and the students return in January for the final semester, which lasts until late March.

    • Yukari: Well, now that we've cleaned up the desks, I'm going to introduce her. Cleaning is an important part of the student's life, as they have a traditional souzi touban, or cleaning, of the classroom. Every week a different group does the cleaning. Every quarter or so, there's an o-souzi ("big cleaning"), and it's like America spring cleaning.

    • Tomo: "She's probably equipped with an amazing "Tsukkomi!"
There is a comedy act in the Kansai region in which one person says something stupid (Boke) and the other person corrects them (Tsukkomi) through some form of physical contact, usually a light beating or witty commentary.

    • Miss Yukari: "You don't have to strain yourself and speak standard." She is referring to the fact that Ayumu is from Osaka, and Yukari believes that everyone from Osaka naturally speaks with a Kansai dialect.

    • Osaka: "I was hoping you would say, 'That's not trivial knowledge, it's BEAN knowledge.'" Bean knowledge is an idiom that means miscellanous knowledge in Japanese. • Osaka: "It's an American! We have an American among us!
When Osaka called Sakaki an American, it sounds like she was making fun of how American girls tend to be a bit more... developed than Japanese girls. It seems like Japanese girls tend to have more modest figures and don't like to flaunt it very much.

    • Osaka: "And, you know azarashi? You write it as ocean's leopard in kanji." Kanji is a Japanese system of writing based on borrowed or modified Chinese characters. The Japanese writing system also uses hiragana, katakana, and sometimes romaji (Roman alphabet letters). These characters are distinct from, though commonly used in combination with, kanji. Furigana are also added sometimes.
