    • Yemana: How many guys they lay off at the 3-3? Dietrich: Oh, there was about 26 uniforms and 9 detectives. Fish: What about the older cops? The better cops? Dietrich: Well, I'm afraid we've lost some of the older cops. But then we lost some of the better ones, too.

    • Fish: Look, you can't stop the years from passing by. There comes a time when changes have to be made. Someone younger and stronger comes along to fill your shoes and a person has to gracefully step aside. Well, I'm not willing to do that. The way I figure, I'm worth more on restricted duty than all of you put together on full time. Good night, gentlemen.

    • Biff: I wanna talk to Miss Fish about why I'm giving up my sex education classes.
Dietrich: What's the matter, too much homework?
Biff: No, I'm just losing interest in everything else.

    • Dietrich: I thought about being an actor though. In college I was Nick the bartender in The Time of Your Life. You know the play? Biff: Yeah. William Saroyan. Dietrich: That's right. Well, anyway it was opening night, it was a rainy night and hardly anybody showed up. So around like the second act everybody got bored and a couple years later I became a cop.

    • (talking about Fish)
: He went to the park. He always goes there when he quits. He feeds the pigeons.
Dietrich: I can't imagine him feeding pigeons.
Bernice: Well, actually he buys day old bread and throws it at them.

    Notes (3)

    • Even though he appears in the opening credits, Harris does not appear in this episode.

    • This is the first appearance of the character of Detective Arthur Dietrich. He will become a recurring character in the third season and a regular character starting in the fourth.

    • For only this episode Bernice Fish is played by Doris Belack not Florence Stanley.

    Trivia (2)

    • This is the only episode in the series in which both Chano and Dietrich appear.

    • This episode was a back door pilot for a proposed spin-off show to star Fish and his life at home. Fish received his own series in 1977, although it was slightly different from the original concept saddling the character with a bunch of delinquent kids when Fish's home became a group home.

    Allusions (1)

    • Bernice: He sounds just like Gregory Peck!

One of the most admired actors in Hollywood, Gregory Peck (1916-2003) had a career that stretched from the 1940's to the '70's. Among his screen successes were Roman Holiday (1953), The Guns of Navarone (1961), On the Beach (1959), The Boys from Brazil (1978)and the classic To Kill a Mockingbird (1962).
