  • Exodus, Part 1

  • First two seasons of BSG are flawless and television at its best: character-driven drama that is constantly challenging the viewer and keeping us hanging on every moment with excellent writing and top-notch acting and visuals; first 3 eps of S3 fail...

  • Quotes (6)

    • Racetrack: Their enemies will divide them, their colonies broken in the fiery chasm of space. Their shining days renounced by a multitude of dark sacrifices. Yet still they will remain, always together.

    • Baltar: (to Caprica Six) Well let me tell you about my day. It was a hoot. Had the most fascinating chat with one of the Dorals. He's got this theory about sanitation being the key to regaining human trust and confidence. Something about toilet paper. No, lack of toilet paper, that's it. How if people could only wipe their bums properly, there would be a measurable uptick in the polls.

    • (after tackling Tom to avoid the gunfire) Laura Roslin: Are you all right, Tom? Tom Zarek: Yeah. It's been a while since I've had a woman throw me to the ground. Not quite as much fun as I remember.

    • Tigh: Chief! Pull it together. You won't do her any good if you get caught too. Besides, the last thing your son wants is me and Ellen for parents.

    • Adama: This is the Admiral. You've heard the news. You know the mission. You should also know that there is only one way that this mission ends, and that's with the successful rescue of our people off of New Caprica. Look around you. Take a good look at the men and women that stand next to you. Remember their faces, for one day you will tell your children, and your grandchildren, that you served with such men and women as the universe has never seen, and together you accomplished a feat that will be told and retold down through the ages. And find immortality as only the Gods once knew. I'm proud to serve with you. Good hunting.

    Notes (4)

    • Madeline Parker (Kacey Brynn) was listed in the end credits as "Madeleine Parker."

    • Oracle Selloi is the first oracle to be shown in the series, although oracles have been mentioned previously. Chief Tyrol's mother was an oracle.

    • Marvel Comics released a "Battlestar Galactica" comic book titled "Exodus!" in the spring of 1979. The story was based on "Saga of a Star World, Part 2," the 2nd part of the opening story from the original Battlestar Galactica TV series.

    • "Exodus" was originally planned as a single-episode story, but was later expanded into a two-part story.

    Trivia (2)

    • Chief Tyrol appears in this episode clean-shaven. He filmed his scenes for this episode weeks after the other scenes were shot. The producers felt a fake beard would not appear realistic so Tyrol appeared without the beard.

    • Ryan Robbins, who guest stars as Connor, is better known to Sci Fi Channel fans as Ladon Radim, leader of the Genii on Stargate Atlantis. Mr. Robbins also appeared in the Battlestar Galactica miniseries as the Armistice Station Officer. He was presumably also Boxey's father as he has a photo of Boxey with him.

    Allusions (3)

    • Exodus Exodus is the second book of the Old Testament and the second book of the Torah. It tells the story of the departure from Egypt of the Hebrew slaves under the guidance of Moses. The word "exodus" comes from the Greek word for a journey out or a departure.

    • Pergamus Flats The name of the Cylon execution site, Pergamus Flats, is an allusion to the ancient Greek city of Pergamus, located near the modern Turkish city of Bergama. The city was founded as a place of refuge and was thought to be a colony of the ancient Arcadians. Pergamus was captured by the Greek soldier and leader Xenophon in 399 BC and was almost immediately retaken by the Persians. The city was harshly punished in 362 BC after a revolt. Among the famous residents of Pergamus were Galen (Claudius Galenus) (ca. 129-200 AD)--the ancient Greek physician whose views dominated European medicine until the Renaissance--and the bishop Gaius, the recipient of the Third Epistle of St. John. Despite its location in Turkey, the modern town of Bergama is approximately 50% Christian.

    • Oracle Selloi The name of the oracle played by Amanda Plummer is Selloi Dodona. This is a reference to the ancient Greek oracles at Dodona called Selloi. The cult of Zeus centered around a sacred oak at Dodona where the priests, or Selloi, received divination from the rustling of the leaves and branches of the tree.
