  • show Description
  • Beauty and the Beast is a story that tells just how powerful love is. The show takes place in New York. Catherine Chandler is a wealthy woman who thinks that her life has no meaning beyond anything superficial. She longs for something more.Vincent is from a different world. He lives below the city in tunnels that have been forgotten. He must stay hidden because of his appearance. Though his appearance is different he has the heart of a man. He and Catherine share a bond that is stronger than friendship or love.Somehow they want to make their love work. Neither one of them knows how, but they are determined and refuse to give up. After all love is stronger than anything thing else. This is how the episodes started throughout the 1st and 2nd season: Vincent: This is where the wealthy and the powerful rule. It is her world, a world apart from mine. Her name is Catherine. From the moment I saw her, she captured my heart with her beauty, her warmth, and her courage. I knew then, as I know now, she would change my life forever.Catherine: He comes from secret place, far below the city streets, hiding his face from strangers, safe from hate and harm. He brought me there to save my life; and now wherever I go, he is with me in spirit. For we have a bond stronger than friendship or love...and although we cannot be together, we will never, ever be apart. The beginning changed in the 3rd season on "Walk Slowly." This was the new one:Vincent: In this city of night, in this city of millions, there are countless stories. This is one of two lovers who shared a bond that changed their lives forever. It is my story. Her compassion opened my heart to a world where goodness and truth were stronger than hate or fear. Then, one day, she was taken from me by the forces of evil she battled so bravely. And now, alone with her memory, yet armed with her courage, I have sworn to fight those who would kill or harm or destroy, in the hope that one day I will find what all men seek to find: my destiny.moreless

    • Vincent: Goodbye.
      Catherine: For now.

    • Catherine: I owe you everything.
Vincent: You owe me nothing. I am a part of you, Catherine just as you are a part of me. Wherever you go, wherever I am, I'm with you.

    • Vincent: I've seen your world. There is no place for me in it. I know what I am. Your world is filled with frightened people and I remind them of what they are most afraid of. Catherine: Their own ignorance. Vincent: Their aloneness. Catherine: Yes.

    • Vincent: Catherine, I feel the things you are feeling when you do. Catherine: How do you mean? Vincent: Just know that it's true and that your pain is my pain. Sometimes it is almost as if we're one.

    • Father: She can only bring you unhappiness. Vincent: Then I'll be unhappy. But I cannot forget her. We are still connected. Father: Vincent, your senses, your empathic powers, are quite extraordinary. It's your gift. And these powers have been heightened by the concern, by the love that you feel, but don't let your act of kindness destroy you. Vincent: Maybe I have no choice.

    • Vincent: Catherine, you survived. And what you endured will make you stronger and better. Catherine: I don't have your strength. I don't know how to do it. Vincent: You have the strength, Catherine, you do. I know you.

    • Vincent: I have never regretted what I am. Until now.... I was born and I survived.

    • Catherine: Vincent, please, tell me. Vincent: We're below the city, below the subways. There is a whole world of tunnels and chambers that most people don't even know exists. There are no maps to where we are. It's a forgotten place. But it's warm and it's safe, and we have all the room we need. So we live here and we try to live as well as we can, and we try to take care of each other. It's our city, down here.

Vincent: This is where the wealthy and the powerful rule. It is her world, a world apart from mine. Her name is Catherine. From the moment I saw her, she captured my heart with her beauty, her warmth, and her courage. I knew then, as I know now, she would change my life forever.

    Trivia (17)

    • The man holding the knife in this episode is played by the same actor as the one who plays Eddie, Charles's brother, in the TV series, Brothers.

    • Nitpick: Catherine wears a beautiful ring while she is healing Below. When she leaves the party, she isn't wearing that ring. And when she is healed, and returns to her own world, then she isn't wearing it either. She only wears it in the tunnels, while she is healing.

    • The sweater that Catherine is wearing in the last scene of this episode is the same one that Margaret is wearing in "Song Of Orpheus".

    • Nitpick: When Vincent is going to rescue Catherine he runs through the tunnels and is seen riding the top of a subway train. These are the same scenes that are in the first episode. So is the scene of Vincent climbing up a building and looking out at the city.

    • The girl who plays Ellie is not the same girl in "A Children's Story". "A Children's Story" aired after "No Way Down", but was filmed prior, so it gives the idea that there are 2 characters named Ellie. Also, Mayim Bialik who plays Ellie in this episode is best known as playing the starring role in Blossom.

    • Goof: During the scene where Father and Vincent talk about the Halloween stories, Vincent tells Father not to worry and then we see Ron's hand (not Vincent's!) on Father's shoulder.

    • This is the first time we see Clive Rosengren in his recurring role as Lou.

    • Margaret is wearing the same sweater as Catherine in the closing scene on "Terrible Savior".

    Allusions (10)

    • Catherine's reference to Jason's immortality, waiting until he is needed again "Like King Arthur" alludes to one of the myriad legends of Arthur which states that the king will rise again when he is needed. It's derived from Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur (Death of Arthur) - 1470.

    • Peter J Formaniai: Beauty and the Beast had a lot of culture in it. Poetry, novels, classical music pieces.
      Shakespeare, William (1564-1616) "Sonnet 29" (1598) (Read)

    • The name of the building Vincent must locate to reach safety, "The Beaumont" - is an obvious reference to Gabrielle's Beaumont, the author of the original story of "Beauty and the Beast"

    • This is poetry that was used in this episode: "Kubla Khan"
In Xanadu did Kubla Khan A stately pleasure-some decree:
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
      Through caverns measureless to man
      Down to a sunless sea.
So twice five miles of fertile ground
With walls and towers were girdled round:
And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills,
      Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree;
And here were forests ancient as the hills,..."
      - Samuel Taylor Coleridge

    • Ozymandius by Percy Bysshe Shelley:
I met a traveler from an antique land,
Who said-two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert...Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
      The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal, these words appear:
My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings,
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

    • The title "Ashes, Ashes" is also a line from a popular children's rhyme: Ring a round a rosie, Pocket full of posey, Ashes, Ashes, We all fall down.

    • Catherine's lullabye that her mother used to sing to her that she now sings to a dying Ellie: Sleep my pretty one. Rest now my pretty one. Close your eyes the day is nearly done. Rest your heart, tomorrow will surely come. Sleep my pretty one. Rest now my pretty one. Close your eyes the day is nearly done...

    • Tamara: It was all so long ago. What has their world to do with you? Paracelsus: Their world is mine by rights. I made them. I taught them. But... they have lessons yet to learn. Tamara: What kind of lessons? Paracelsus: Poetry lessons. (recites from "Dover Beach" by Matthew Arnold) For the world, which seems To lie before us like a land of dreams, So various, so beautiful, so new. Hath really no joy, nor love, nor light, Nor certitude, nor peace, nor help for pain; And we are here as on a darkling plain Swept with confused alarms of struggle and fight Where ignorant armies clash by night.
