  • show Description
  • Thirty-two years old, perpetually single and struggling economically, Erica Strange gets serious about understanding where it all went wrong with the help of the mysterious Dr. Tom. In each episode, Erica relives a deeply regretted part of her past and has the chance to do it all over again differently so as to make a positive change in her "present" life. The series, which premiered January 5th, 2009 on CBC in Canada, is currently airing in the U.S. on the cable channel SOAPnet. In May of 2010, both CBC and SOAPnet announced plans to renew the hit dramedy for a third 13 episode season (Season Two had only twelve due to CBC budget cutbacks). While new episodes began airing in Canada on September 21, 2010, U.S. fans will have to wait until January of 2011 for Season Three of Being Erica.moreless

    • Erica: Change. Sometimes it sneaks up on you. Sometimes it hits you over the head. And sometimes you turn a corner, only to find you're different in some small way, and the world doesn't look quite like it used to. So, where do I go from here? No idea. And for the first time, I feel like that's a good thing.

    • Erica: What about paradoxes, huh? Butterfly Effect, Back to the Future? Dr. Tom: I love that movie. Erica: If I change the past, if I don't get drunk, would that cause, like, World War III in the present? Dr. Tom: Or, is it possible that your alcohol consumption, though very important to you, might not play a role in influencing world events?

    • Erica: So Dad's in the living room smoking pot, and my 13-year-old brother in law just checked me out. If this is a dream, it's scary real. I have no words. Well, maybe three: what the hell?

    • Erica: You know that friend you have? The girl who seems to have it all figured out? She's got the great job, the great guy, the great life. Well...I'm not that girl. My name is Erica Strange. I'm 32, still working a dead end job, still sleeping with my cat. I know people wonder why the cute girl with the great education and the great friends can't get it together. There's a simple answer: bad decisions. I could teach a course on messing up your life. Really, I'm that good at getting everything wrong. The worst part is, it wasn't always like this. I used to be a rising star. But these days, I just feel like I flame out.

    • Erica: Everyone's got their own path. Some are only just beginning, while others end all too soon. However you do it, the fact is, the path you're on, the choices you make, define who you are. Choices. They're the building blocks or our lives, they shape our past, present and future. And despite all the mistakes I've made, every new day brings with it new choices and their whole new world of possibilities.

    • Dr. Tom: The egg. Perfection, both in function and in form. It has a double arch, top and bottom, it's what makes an egg so incredibly strong. But the minute that we begin to chip away at its integrity, the egg collapse in on itself, until in the end we're left with only...breakfast. It's still an egg, but it's not the same.

    • Erica: Choices. They're close enough and you can see them everywhere. But what do you do when you see your life as a series of bad choices? When you would give anything to have made different ones. The question is: if you could go back and do it all differently, would you still be you?

    • Erica: A resume. It tells a story. School, job, hobbies. It's a snapshot of who we are. (...) And at the end of the day it all comes down to the choices we've made.

    Allusions (24)

    • Erica: What about paradoxes, huh? Butterfly Effect, Back to the Future? Erica references two movies that have to do with time travel, similar to her situation: The Butterfly Effect and Back To The Future.

    • When trying to bail her out of a date, Erica tells Ethan to "only call if Godzilla attacks." Godzilla is a fictional monster from the 1954 Japanese movie of the same name.

    • "The Secret of Now" is reference to both Eckhart Tolle's self help book The Power of Now which was a New York Times Best Seller in 2005, and Rhonda Byrne's self help book The Secret which was a New York Times Best Seller in 2006.

    • Erica: And you-you look like a reject from The Village People. Referring to Dr. Tom's gay biker outfit, Erica alludes to The Village People, a costumed, '80's disco group created to target disco's large gay audience.

    • Judith: Oh, that Ani DiFranco box set. Jenny: That Melissa Etheridge collection - and the women's softball league you joined back in grade 9. Thinking that Erica has been "outed" as a lesbian, her friends allude to Melissa Etheridge and Ani DiFranco, two openly gay musicians - as if listening to their music would somehow confirm "gayness".

    • Leo: If loving my sister's friends is wrong, I don't wanna be right! Leo is alluding to "(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want to Be Right", a song about adultery written by Stax songwriters Homer Banks, Carl Hampton and Raymond Jackson. Although the soulful ballad has been covered by more than a dozen artists, the most likely reference for Leo's allusion would be either the #1 soul single by Luther Ingram (1972) or the #1 country single by Barbara Mandrell (1979).

    • Erica: Live long and prosper. To make Ivan feel better about having rejected him and his vampire fantasy, Erica tries to relate by alluding to Spock from Star Trek. She even gives the Vulcan hand gesture.

    • The title of this episode is an allusion to both the 1992 movie and the iconic American television series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003).

  • If the CBC could go back in time, they should pass on this pitch. Nothing would change in present time - their network still wouldn't be watched.
