  • Episode Description
  • Kelly and Matt help Dylan search for his father. They learn that Eddie Waitkus lives in Tolleson, Arizona; and Kelly obtains his address. Dylan sees that Jack has a happy life with a wife and young son, and decides not to approach him. Jack shows up at Dylan's hotel room. Donna insists on looking after Noah as he recovers from his injuries. Noah tries to rekindle their relationship, but Donna has moved on. Camille becomes jealous of the closeness between David and Donna. Although David and Donna try to establish some boundaries, neither seems very happy about it. Steve's brother Ryan comes to visit for spring break. He is a pre-med major at Amherst. Ryan goes drinking at clubs with Steve every night, lies around like a pig all day, and mouths off to Janet. Janet opines that Ryan is trying to live up to Steve's reputation. Ryan reveals that he wound up on academic probation because of his constant partying, and dropped out of school. • Music: Father Figure by George Michael

    • Nat is apparently home from his cruise (but still off-camera), as Steve mentioned calling him at the Peach Pit as he tried to learn Ryan's whereabouts.

    • Ryan's reappearance is largely due to the cancellation of the Aaron Spelling-produced soap opera Sunset Beach, which featured Randy Spelling.

    Allusions (2)

    • Eddie Waitkus (1919-1972) is a real life baseball player, who made his debut in 1941, playing 1st base for the Chicago Cubs (1941; 1946-1948). He then played for the Philadelphia Phillies (1949-1953) and then the Baltimore Orioles (1954-1955), before ending his career as a second time Philly in 1955. Waitkus would become the inspiration for Bernard Malamud's 1952 book, The Natural. It would be adapted for film in 1984. This is the book that Dylan references when talking about the story he read with his father.

    • The episode title is from a line in George Michael's 1987 song "Father Figure".
