Ani Pema ChÃ¶drÃ¶n is an American Buddhist nun and author whose teachings and writings on meditation have helped make Buddhism accessible to a broad Western audience. She currently directs the Gampo Abbey in Nova Scotia, Canada, the first Tibetan monastery in North America for Western monastics and lay practitioners. Born Deirdre Blomfield-Brown in New York, ChÃ¶drÃ¶n was raised in a Catholic family in New Jersey. After earning a master's in education from the University of California, Berkeley, and teaching elementary school in California and New Mexico for nearly a decade, ChÃ¶drÃ¶n discovered Tibetan Buddhism in 1972 while on a trip to the French Alps. In 1974, she began a 13-year tenure with the meditation master Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, founder of the Shambhala school of Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhism, and became one of his foremost students.
