  • "Body & Soul" takes place at Columbus, Ohio's Century Hospital, where Western and alternative medicine, as well as the reverent and irreverent, coexist. Dr. Rachel Griffen (Laskin) has recently returned from a two-year fellowship in the Far East. Her eyes have been opened to "alternative medicine," combining alternative therapies and treatments with the traditional practices of Western medicine. Dr. Isaac Braun (Strauss), chief of surgery and ironically Dr. Griffen's former mentor, has no belief in or tolerance for alternative practices. Dr. Braun's belief in science-based, Western medicine is absolute. In the series opener, Dr. Griffen has gathered a few supportive staff physicians and nurses to help launch her revolution, but is on the verge of being fired for clashing with the hospital's entrenched philosophy. The hospital's profit-driven Chief of Medicine, Dr. Philip Grenier (Duncan Regehr), is poised to shut down the alternative Center until his prized -- and lecherous -- benefactor, Wallace Beaton (James Callahan), becomes enamored with Dr. Griffen. In Beaton's hour of medical desperation, it is Dr. Griffen's unorthodox group, with the unlikely and critical assistance of Dr. Braun, who saves his life, thus winning his generous support for the alternative Center. Safe for the moment from Dr. Grenier's budget axe, Dr. Griffen is forced to team up with Dr. Braun. Under Beaton's watchful eye, their relationship and opposing points of view form the body and soul of the series. In addition to Strauss and Laskin, the series features Currie Graham as the gay Dr. Quinton Bremmer, a family medicine specialist and committed practitioner of alternative medical techniques; Duncan Regehr as Dr. Phillip Grenier, the hospital administrator who believes that traditional medicine is the only way; Conrad Coates as Dr. Marshall Banks, an African-American intern at a career crossroad; Idalis de Leon as Yolanda Rosales, a Hispanic nurse who delights in "hands on" work with patients (e.g., rolfing and lymphatic drainage); Gil Birmingham as Oz, a faithful orderly; and Brian McNamara as Dr. Jerry Donovan, Dr. Griffen's handsome and successful ex-husband. Saskatchewan-based Edge Entertainment Inc. produces "Body & Soul," which is being shot in Saskatoon, Canada. Along with Whelpley and Tortorici, David Doerksen of Edge Entertainment executive produces, and Leanne Arnott of Edge Entertainment produces.moreless
