  • Episode Description
  • In flashback, Charles is painting a portrait of Julia at Brideshead when Bridey arrives and announces his intention of marrying a Mrs Beryl Muspratt, a middle-aged widow, whom he has met through his hobby of collecting match-box covers. He rebukes Julia for her affair with Charles and says Beryl could not bear to spend a night under the same roof with the two of them while they are "living in sin". Cordelia brings news of Sebastian, who is now living a dismal life as an odd-job man in a remote monastery in North Africa.moreless

    • Lady Marchmain: (reading aloud from a 'Father Brown' story) I caught him with an unseen hook and an invisible line which is long enough to let him wander to the ends of the world and still to bring him back with a twitch upon the thread.

    Allusions (1)

    • The title of this episode alludes to a passage in G. K. Chesterton's story The Queer Feet, part of the collection The Innocence of Father Brown: "Did you catch this man?" asked the colonel, frowning. Father Brown looked him full in his frowning face. "Yes", he said, "I caught him, with an unseen hook and an invisible line which is long enough to let him wander to the ends of the world, and still to bring him back with a twitch upon the thread."
