  • Quotes (27)

    • Buffy: Oh no, I have to go take an English make-up exam. They give you credit just for speaking it, right?

    • Giles: It's a great honor to be invited... or so I'm told. Faith: Oh, it's boring. Way too stuffy for a guy like you. Buffy: Um, maybe I should introduce you again. Faith, this is Giles. Faith: I've seen him. If I'd known they came that young and cute, I would've requested a transfer. Buffy: Raise your hand if "ew."

    • Willow: Oz is a werewolf. Buffy: It's a long story. Oz: I got bit. Buffy: Apparently not that long.

    • Willow: Are you mad at me? Giles: No, of course not, no. If I were, I would be making a strange clucking sound with my tongue.

    • Willow: Have you ever noticed though, when he's mad but he's too English to say anything, he makes that weird cluck-cluck sound with his tongue? Buffy: (seeing Giles behind Willow) Hi Giles!

    Notes (8)

    • Eliza Dushku had just graduated from high school when she was cast as Faith, making her the youngest actress on the show.

    • Giles mentions that the annual Watcher's retreat is held in the Cotswolds. This is the same location of the Deeper Well, the burial ground of the Old Ones (as mentioned in spin-off series Angel in the episode "A Hole in the World" (5x103) .

    • Faith's Watcher is the first female Watcher to be mentioned on the show since Giles' grandmother in "Never Kill a Boy on the First Date" (1x05).

    • Featured Music: The song that plays during Buffy's dream is called "The Background" by Third Eye Blind. The band playing while Faith dances as the Scoobies look on is called "Darling Violetta," the very same band who composed the theme music for sister show Angel.

    • The battle between Faith and the vampire takes place inside LA Firestation 23, also used as the interior for the firehouse of the Ghostbusters in 1984 and '89.

    Trivia (4)

    • Goof: When Buffy pulls Faith away from Scott, she grabs her by her wrist, but when the shot changes, Buffy is holding her by her elbow.

    • When Buffy first stakes Kakistos, he doesn't turn to dust. He tells her that maybe she needs a bigger stake, so Faith picks up a broken wood beam and impales him with it. Maybe she didn't need a bigger stake at all, but to hit in him the correct spot? Her first stake was in the middle right of his chest, instead of the upper left where the heart is located.

    • Nitpick: When Faith is telling the story about the vampires at the church, she says they were "feeding on half the Baptists in South Boston." The only major church in South Boston is Old South Church, and it's actually Episcopalian, not Baptist.

    • Goof: Right after Kakistos is killed, the next thing we see is an establishing shot outside the school. But if you look closely, it is the same outside shot used in "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered". You can see Harmony and the other girls in the back and the two people sitting on the bench. In the film industry this is called "cheating".

    Allusions (15)

    • Faith: I was getting the job done.
Buffy: The job is to slay demons, not to beat them to a bloody pulp while their friends corner me.
This may be a reference to the season 2 episode "Ted", in which Giles and Buffy have almost exactly the same exchange. In that episode, Buffy says "What? I kill vampires, that's my job." To which Giles replies: "True, true, but you don't usually beat them into quite such a bloody pulp beforehand." This is perhaps the earliest sign of Faith's future, as Buffy, once in the rebellious role, is now mirroring Giles' advice.

    • Giles: There's a Watchers' retreat every year in the Cotswolds
Cotswolds: Hilly district of west England, notable for it's picturesque beauty and and colorful local folklore. The reference may be to the Order of the Talamasca, the equivalent to the Watchers' Council in Anne Rice's fiction. Their motto is "We watch and we are always here" and their leader (until Lestat vamped him) was David Talbot who lived in the Cotswolds.

    • Scott: Or maybe at the Buster Keaton festival playing on State Street all this week.
Buster Keaton is an actor best known as a star of silent movie comedies. He's roughly comparable to the better known Charlie Chaplin.

    • Joyce: I have tried to march in the "Slayer Pride" parade.
Joyce compares being the parent of the Slayer with being the parent of another ostracized group with a play on the Gay Pride Parade. In other words, she has tried to be supportive of Buffy's "lifestyle" but is having difficulty.

    • Buffy: No, but I'm the one getting Single White Female'd here.
This is a reference to the 1992 movie Single White Female. In the movie, a woman's new roommate slowly starts acting like her, dressing like her, and attempting to take over her life.
