    • Athena: (hysterically, after Soaron) Johnny, you don't know what it's like in there, inside The Machine! I can't do it again, not again! You're so alone...
Captain Power: (passionately) No, not alone, not alone! I'll be there with you, and I'll find you, and we'll fight it together! But we've got to hope, we've got to hope, for what we once were. (he kisses her)

    • Lord Dread: Perhaps the answer to my future lies in Power's past.

    • Scout: (looking at a tracking chip removed from Athena) Homer and voice transmitter, sweet.
      Athena: Shouldn't you destroy that?
Captain Power: Our ship and base have a jamming device.
Pilot: (taking the chip and stomping on it) If it will make you feel better, it'll make me feel better.

    • Captain Power: Athena was my father's lab assistant. She was brilliant, beautiful. Every Friday we'd meet at City Limits Bookstore. We'd sit, play chess, talk. I never could beat her at chess.
      Pilot: Just friends?

    • Athena: (explaining what it was like being "digitized") I landed inside- inside the machine! You can feel it touching you, Johnny, it, it's wires and metal but it touches you. And it knows every secret, every shame, every hate... every love. It knows, Johnny, and it tortures you with them until... Dread brought me out to get you, Johnny- to put you in!

    • Hawk: (as the interrogator leaves Power's cell) If you've harmed him, there's no place on the planet you can hide from me!
Interrogator: He's strong, haven't met anyone like him. He'll survive, not that it'll make much difference.

    • General Briggs: You know, we had a theory about why we lost that war. Same problem they had back in Nam. Songs, Colonel. No good war songs! In Nam all the songs were on the other side. Same when we fought down south. Neither war had a good song, so we lost. Maybe that's what's wrong now.

    • Captain Power: Your General's mad. I've been here for five minutes and I can see it.

    Notes (33)

    • Sven-Ole Thorsen was the only actor who was featured in the show's promotional video made to sell the show to the Network. The video also featured a character who never made it onto the series, Colonel Nathan "Stingray" Johnson, who was the team's specialist in aquatic operations.

    • Before the show began airing there were commercials broadcast in which they said that Pilot's name was Tiffany "Pilot" Chase.

    • Tank, Pilot and Scout did not appear in this episode.

    • Both major guest stars would go on to having distinguished acting careers. Wayne Best (Commander Lorek) became one of Canada's finest Shakespearean actors, with numerous starring roles at the world famous annual Stratford Festival in Ontario. Gordon Michael Woolvett (Mitch) starred in numerous television shows, including the scifi series Andromeda, in which he played Seamus Harper.

    • Jessica Morgan is a name commonly used by Marv Wolfman in his scripts. His daughter, first name Jessica, middle name Morgan, claims her father likes to name damsel in distress characters after her. For instance, in the Transformers story arc, "The Return Of Optimus Prime" Wolfman co-wrote, Jessica Morgan is a woman who is briefly paralyzed after an accident.

    • David James Elliott, who plays the fake Captain Power, would go on to a distinguished acting career, most notably playing Commander Harmon Rabb, Jr. for ten seasons on JAG. Tim Dunigan would guest star on David's series in the seventh season episode "Head To Toe".

    • No one is listed in the credits as voicing the new Bio-Dread Laccki, including Don Francks, who is usually credited with voicing him.

    • The Jump Ship's breakaway fighter jet is the same design as the Mattel toy sold in connection with the show. The toy was able to fire beams at the television set and register hits on the glowing orange spots on Bio-Dreads, and take hits in return from the broadcasts. Unfortunately, the toys did not work as well as hoped, and when Mattel's toy sales for the show proved inadequate, the show itself lost its major source of funding, leading to its cancellation after only one season despite its high ratings and critical acclaim.

    Trivia (44)

    • Nitpick San Francisco was supposedly totally destroyed, but there's a stoplight intact and with power?!

    • Each Power Suit has different capabilities. Scout's has the ability to mimic Bio-Dread Troopers, and Hawk's Suit is flight capable.

    • Captain Pwer's armor includes a jet propulsion pack which allows him to jump out of trouble.

    • We learn that Hawk and Dr Stuart Power, the Captain's father, knew Lord Dread before the Metal Wars began, and that Dread killed Dr Power.

    • We learn that Soaron has the ability to regenerate major damage to itself, but the process takes time.

    • The bio weapon in the infected boy is a variation on the Styx Phase of Project New Order.

    • Bio-Dread troopers are led by human officers on missions of the highest priority.

    • We get the first view of the man Lord Dread was, Lyman Taggart. Jessica knew him before he was Lord Dread.

    Allusions (20)

    • While he waited for the Bio-Dread troopers to find him the General sings The Road to Tipperary, which was a patriotic song sung during the first World War.

    • Lord Dread: Chapter four. And the Machine was given unto men. The Machine was perfect of line and elegant of form. And the Machine said, 'This is my gift to my people, that they may throw off the bonds of flesh.'

This is purposefully reminiscent of Genesis in the King James Bible.

    • Tank: When I escaped Babylon 5, I swore I put that life behind me.

Writer J. Michael Straczynski slipped in a reference to a concept TV series he had just come up with. The idea would come to fruition for him in 1993, with the syndicated TV show Babylon 5, which ran for six seasons.

    • Scout: (to Tank) Let's move it, Bigfoot.

"Bigfoot" is the popular name of the mythical beast Sasquatch. It was supposed to live in the Pacific Northwest, and stories of it were told by the Native Americans of the region.

    • Lord Dread: (to the Dread Youth graduates) Give me your blood, your trust, your minds and we shall build a new tomorrow!

This speech is reminiscent of the acceptance speech given by John F. Kennedy at the 1960 Democratic National Convention. JFK tells his supporters, "Give me your help and your hand and your voice."

    • The Ferryman: This episode's title comes from Greek mythology. It refers to Charon, who was said to ferry the souls of the dead across the River Styx to the Underworld. Charon is also the name of the second phase of Lord Dread's Project New Order.

    • Pilot: Either this works, or we go down in the biggest blast since Tunguska.

The Tunguska Event occurred in 1908 over Russia. It is theorized that a blast wave resulting from the explosion of a large meteorite or comet fragment several kilometers above ground caused large scale destruction of a large area of the countryside. It's estimated strength ranges from 5 to 30 megatons (likely 10-15 megatons, 1,000 times more powerful than the atomic blast over Hiroshima). It's thought to have leveled 80 million trees alone, and is thought to have been equivalent to an earthquake of 5 on the Richter scale.

    • Lord Dread: How many voices live within you, Overmind?
Overmind: Many, for we are legion.

This is a reference to the New Testament story of Jesus casting the demons out of a man and into a herd of swine. Jesus asks the demon what its name is and it replies, "Legion, for we are many". The story is told in the three Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke.
