  • Catherine Cookson's The Dwelling Place is a British television mini-series based on the best selling novel, The Dwelling Place, written by author Catherine Cookson. The series, which was first broadcast in 1994, stars actors Tracy Whitwell, Lucy Cohu and Edward Rawle-Hicks. Set in England during the 1830s, The Dwelling Place tells the story of desperate teenager Cissie Brodie (Tracy Whitwell). Cissie's parents have both died and the family home she grew up in with her brothers, Jimmy (Luke Conway), William (Danny Lee) and Joe (Andrew McWilliams), and sisters, Bella (Leanne Bradford) and Mary (Fiona Dixon) has been repossessed. With nowhere to go, Cissie and her siblings move into a barren cave. As she struggles to take care of her younger siblings, Cissie falls in love with a poor, sweet-natured carpenter named Matthew Turnbull (Ray Stevenson). When Cissie is viciously raped by aristocrat Clive Fischel (Edward Rowie-Hicks), she finds herself locked in a battle of wills with his powerful family. Is she strong enough to survive?moreless
