  • show Description
  • Chain Reaction has just come back to television from it's 1980s' airing. The show airs on GSN, and put two teams against each other for a word chain battle. A team of three women face off against a team of three men. Each team is then showed a chain, which features the first and a last word. The teams then take turns saying if they would rather get a letter below the top word, or above the bottom word. Those words then develop into a chain, and which ever team guessed the last word, gets a speed chain, which gives them seven seconds to come up with two good answers to a smaller chain of only four words in length. The point value increases with each round, and the final round allows you to bet up to five hundred dollars at one given time to guess words in the last chain. The team that then ends with the most money goes on to the final, where one team member is covered with a blindfold, and the other two members take turns saying one word at a time that describe the secret word, and the solo player must try to guess that word. The team has a chance to double and even triple their winnings, and go home with even more money.moreless

  • Trivia & Quotes
  • Quotes (4)

    • The last chain Bill Cullen delivered read as follows: CHAIN REACTION AUDIENCE VIEWERS NIELSEN NUMBER CANCELLATION GOOD-BYE (Well, at least good-bye until 1986.)

    • Sarah (CHI is showing after WIND): Chicken. Oh, I thought it said wing.

    • Dylan: It's a battle of the sexes on Chain Reaction.

    • Dylan (to Goldy, who is banging his head on the podium as Louie risks $400): Don't hurt yourself Adam, the team needs you here.

    Notes (10)

    • This pilot was not aired originally by NBC, but was run on CBN and USA cable networks in the 1980's, and GSN later.

    • In this first incarnation to make the air, the bonus round was as follows: The player starts with $1, and has 60 seconds to get as many as eight correct answers, with each adding a half-zero to the money. Only full zeros counted, so the total possible was $10,000. These rules were changed after the first week.

    • The third format for the bonus round has the contestant trying for ten words in 90 seconds. The first nine are worth $100 each, then the tenth is the jackpot. The producers felt the previous format was rather easy and people were winning too much money.

    • When Barry Manilow was filming an ABC special nearby, he denied access to anyone without a bagel security badge (he designed it in honor of his dog, Bagel). The Chain Reaction crew were upset that they couldn't watch him on their breaks, so they came up with their own 'cream cheese' sticker, and refused to let anyone with a bagel into their set. Editor's note: According to an article in People from this date.

    • Geoff Edwards, who later would be the regular host of the show, substitutes for two weeks, while Bill Cullen is away sub-hosting Password Plus.

    • June 20, 1980 became known as NBC Game Show Death Day, as much of its daytime game show programming was axed. Chain Reaction had suffered from a 12:00 noon EST time slot, up against local news in most areas.

    • This final charity bonus round actually became the premise for the 1983 gameshow, Go, which was another Bob Stewart idea. It was also tried out as Get Rich Quick.

    • Editor's Note: Blake Emmons was host for a few weeks, then was replaced by Geoff Edwards, prior to the debut on USA network in America. It's unclear whether the Emmons episodes aired first, but the show had already been running on CBC in Canada, and regardless, all episodes were eventually shown.

    Trivia (4)

    • This second week saw the rule change as noted in the summary. Also, the player has 90 seconds to get nine answers, a change from 60 seconds to get eight.

    • In round two, Dylan screws up the order play, giving Sean a turn, when it should have been one of the girls. The chain is thrown out, and a new one started. But amazingly, the girls are allowed to keep the $400 they had won in the faulty round. Luckily, it didn't affect the end results, but only just.

    • The guys don't get a single speed chain correct in this game. Had they scored even one, they would have been the ninth straight male winners.

    • At the end of round four, the ladies, trailing $2,000 to $1,700, risked $300, then linked RADIO to HAM and STATION, to give us the first ever tie. The rules call for sudden death speed chains. The girls go first and get METAL MOUTH, to go between PRECIOUS and PIECE. The boys have to link SACRED-C-P-AROUND, or lose the game. They guessed CEREMONY-PLAY. The correct answer was COW-POKE.
