Notes (3)

  • TV Guide citation: In the November 6, 1982 issue of TV Guide there is a ratings report about Cheers with a statement from Brandon Tartikoff, president of NBC Entertainment. NBC has renewed both Taxi and Cheers for the second half of the season despite the fact that both shows started off with extremely poor Nielsen ratings. The two situation comedies have been picked up for nine more weeks in 1983. "We are giving these new shows a vote of confidence," said Brandon Tartikoff, president of NBC Entertainment. "Some shifting of time slots might take place, but for the moment, we have chosen to do nothing. The point is that in the past both shows would have been canceled. We now realize that it does take time for a quality show to catch on." For the first four weeks of the season, Taxi averaged a national audience share of 19 and placed 58th out of 66 prime-time network programs. Cheers had an 18 share and was 62nd. A share of 26 or 27 is usually considered the minimum a show needs to survive. Tartikoff's decision to extend the runs of both shows is based in part on their ratings in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. "We have done very well in the urban areas," Tartikoff said.

  • NBC rebroadcast this episode on June 2, 1983.

  • Kenneth Kimmins is best known as his future role as Howard Burleigh on "Coach" that aired in 1989-1997.
