  • show Description
  • Welcome to the guide to CI5: The New Professionals at TV.com.In this 1998 re-imagining of the original The Professionals TV show, CI5 now has an international remit, being jointly funded by the governments of the UK, U.S.A., Japan, Germany and France, and called upon to deal with terrorism and espionage on an international scale. An all-new cast features the original dynamic of two gung ho field agents (these a former U.S. Navy Seal and a British secret service man) and a cantankerous boss, but adds the dynamic of a female agent, a computer and martial arts expert who came to CI5 by way of the Canadian Secret Service.Expectations were high, but the new show failed to capture the imagination of viewers and only one season was made.moreless

    • Malone: "Make sure this sceptred isle stays clean and smelling if ever so faintly of roses." I didn't say that, George Cowley did, the man who founded CI5. Not that it's just this sceptred isle any more, the whole damn' world. Nothing happens in New York or Nagasaki, Peking or St Petersburg that doesn't have repercussions, which is why we have agents in all of these places. Like the crime we fight, we are now international. Make no mistake about it, this world is a dangerous place.

    • Sam: You ever wonder why Malone paired us off, the Brit and the Yank? Chris: Pay back for the Boston Tea Party.

    • Sam: You all gung-ho and glory, Mr Top Gun. Me, cool, reliable. Chris: You complaining, Curtis? Sam: You rush in while I think it through? No, I'm not complaining. I like the odds. Chris: Odds? Sam: If one of us ends up in a bodybag, it's bound to be you!

    • Sam: It's your turn. Chris: Mine? What about the Turk? Sam: He wasn't armed. Chris: What about that three-foot machete?

    • Leonard: I don't know what your game is, Malone… Malone: Trying to catch terrorists. That's what my game is and I'd thank you to keep your bloody nose out of my business! Good day.

    • Malone: How are things in the CIA? Frank: Get to the point, Harry. You never did know how to schmooz.

    • Sam: Pigs live better than this. Chris: Yeah, well, in some people's eyes I am a pig. You know, cop, pig and all that. Sam: We're not cops. Chris: Sometimes I'm not sure what we are any more — cops, clean-up men, legalised thugs. Sam: Try bastions of freedom and justice.

    • Tina: I'm sorry, I didn't realise you were taking an early lunch. Malone: Late breakfast, actually. Chopsticks, they say it's the air you take in with each mouthful. Apparently it's why you always end up feeling hungry with Chinese food.

    Trivia (1)

    • There are a couple of references to The Professionals. Malone begins his induction speech to new CI5 recruits by quoting George Cowley, the man who founded the organisation and who was in charge of it during the original show. The quote of Cowley's that Malone uses is heard during an induction Cowley himself gives to new CI5 recruits in the episode Old Dog With New Tricks. Sam tells Chris that they used to have an agent with a perm - a probable reference to Martin Shaw's character Ray Doyle. The episode ends with Malone saluting a photograph of George Cowley.

  • It seemed like a good idea to bring back the professionals but this effort never found its own identity, or audience
