  • show Description
  • Cold Case stars Kathryn Morris (Minority Report, Mindhunters) as Lilly Rush, the lone female detective in the Philadelphia homicide squad who finds her calling when she's assigned to "cold cases" -- crimes that have never been solved. Previously, she used her instinctive understanding of the criminal mind on current murders. Now, she's interrogating witnesses whose lives and circumstances have since changed, making use of today's new science and finding fresh clues to solve cases that were previously unsolvable, all of which appeals to this smart, driven detective. She's also prepared for the consequences: that her work will open up old wounds and may lead suspects to commit new crimes. When she hits a dead-end, Lilly seeks advice from her respected mentor, Lt. John Stillman (John Finn, Catch Me If You Can). Also on the team are Det. Scotty Valens (Danny Pino, The Shield), Rush's confident and strong-willed partner; Det. Will Jeffries (Thom Barry, The Fast and the Furious), who's been around long enough to serve as Lilly's link to the past; and Det. Nick Vera (Jeremy Ratchford, Angel Eyes), a tough cop who's considered the go-to guy for getting a confession. Lilly makes it her business to ensure that no victim is ever forgotten. On the show's third season, former narcotics detective Kat Miller (Tracie Thoms, Wonderfalls, As If), a young and spunky girl, joins the team. Cold Case is created by Meredith Stiehm (ER, NYPD Blue). Executive producers -- in addition to Ms. Stiehm -- include such reigning entertainment industry names as Jerry Bruckheimer (The Amazing Race, CSI), Shaun Cassidy (Invasion, The Agency), and Jonathan Littman (The Amazing Race, Close to Home).moreless

  • Quotes (631)

    • Nick Vera: Rush, your boyfriend's downstairs. Lilly Rush: I'm single. You sure it's not your boyfriend?

    • Todd Whitley: Tell me something, Lilly. What is the point of all of this, after so many years? Lilly Rush: People shouldn't be forgotten, even if they are my kind of people. Maybe they don't have a lotta money, they don't have lawyers... but they matter. They should get justice, too. Todd Whitley: I see. You're a crusader. Lilly Rush: I guess I am.

    • Albert: Compulsive Sexual Behavior. It's a psychological condition, it shouldn't be criminalized. Chris Lassing: You walked naked through a girls' middle school, Albert, and that shouldn't be criminalized?

    • Jeffries: An '83 job can wait, Lil. Lilly: No, it can't. It's waited long enough.

    • Lilly: (about catching the bad guys) We don't always get that... Gwen: I know. Lilly: ... the first time around.

    • Lt. Stillman: Why do women always have high hopes for men that want to kill them?

    • Gwen Deemer: Why should I trust you, huh? I don't even know you! Det. Rush: No, you don't, because if you did, you'd know I was just getting started.

    • Rob Deamer: I didn't know there were girls on the line. Lilly: (smirks) There's one.

    • Music Featured in This Episode: - More Than a Feeling by Boston from Boston (1976) - Soul Searching by Soul Hooligan from Music Like Dirt (2002) - You Sexy Thing by Hot Chocolate from Hot Chocolate (1975) - I'm Not in Love by 10cc from The Original Soundtrack (1975) - Have You Ever Seen the Rain by Creedence Clearwater Revival from Pendulum (1970) The Cold Case opening theme song is Nara by E.S. Posthumus, from their 2001 album Unearthed. However, the distinctive and haunting cry in the beginning of the theme is not part of the album version of the song. Instead, it is performed by Elise Morris whom the show's composer Michael A. Levine and his wife Claire heard singing and playing the piano in a restaurant.

    Trivia (344)

    • The triple homicide Lilly shows up to at the beginning of the episode will be solved in the second season premiere, 2-1: The Badlands.

    • This episode doesn't have a crime date. The beginning only says "Philadelphia, 1976" meaning it could be anytime within the year. However, the 1976 scenes appear to be during a warm period and one of the victim's family members mentions to Lilly that she has checked with the police every August since the murder. Therefore, we can assume that Jill Shelby died in the summer of 1976.

    • Dana Deemer was murdered on May 19, 1983.

    • Nitpick: The house in 2003 has been boarded up and abandoned for 20 years. Why is it that the front lawn is green and manicured with a well kept brick walk?

    • Goof: After Lilly talks to Gwen in the back of the patrol car, she opens the door and leaves. The back doors of police cars always have the child safety lock enabled, so someone should have had to open it from the outside.

    • Goof: Half way through the episode when Ellen is getting ready to take a shower, she is interrupted by her cats coming to greet her. However, you can see the second cat is pushed into frame by a hand with enough force to swing the back of the cat towards Ellen. The second cat then runs out of the shot as Ellen tries to grab it.

    • Gail Chimayo was murdered on August 21 or 22, 1998.

    • In this episode, Lilly confirms that she'll only work on cold cases.

    Allusions (193)

    • Todd Whitley calls Lilly a crusader. Kathryn Morris played a crusader in episode 4-8: Crusader of Xena: Warrior Princess.

    • This episode is very reminiscent of the recently solved 1975 murder of 15-year-old Martha Moxley in Greenwich, Connecticut. In that case, the murder weapon was a golf club. On June 7, 2002, the jury found Michael Skakel "Guilty as Charged of Murder in the 1st Degree". Skakel was also 15 at the time of the murder. He belongs to the Kennedy clan, much like the Whitleys in this episode were a socially powerful family.

    • The Center City Rapist This case is similar in nature to the Troy Graves case that was profiled in the episode of Forensic Files titled All Charged Up. A series of rapes occured in the city of Philadelphia. The crimes stopped abruptly, only to start up again in the city of Fort Collins, Colorado. The police were finally able to identify Troy Graves as the "Center City Rapist" after a woman recognized him from a composite drawing.

    • The Texas Cadet Murder This episode was more than likely based on the actual "Texas Cadet Murder" in 1995. Upset that her boyfriend David Graham had cheated on her with 16-year-old Adrianne Jones, Diane Zamora convinced David to kill Adrianne to prove his love for her. On December 4th, 1995, David lured Adrianne out of her home and into his car where he later attacked her (with Diane in the backseat). Adrianne ran for her life only for David to catch up and ruthlessly shoot her to death. The events have been made into a TV movie, called Love's Deadly Triangle: The Texas Cadet Murder, starring Holly Marie Combs as Diane Zamora.

    • Title: A Time to Hate The episode title is from the Bible, specifically from the Book of Ecclesiastes in the Old Testament, Chapter 3, verses 1-8. Verse 8 reads: " A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace." The poem is also the inspiration for the song Turn! Turn! Turn! by The Byrds, which is heard as the last song of this episode.

    • Tinkerbell In this episode, there is a drag queen who uses the name Tinkerbell. Tinkerbell (or Tinker Bell) is a tiny and mischievous fairy in J.M. Barrie's novel Peter Pan. "Fairy" is also a disparaging term used to refer to male homosexuals.

    • Sodom and Gomorrah The locals in the area refer to the gay bar as "lunchroom at the corner of Sodom and Gomorrah". In the Bible, Sodom and Gomorrah were twin cities, notorious for their sins (mainly homosexuality).

    • Title: Sherry Darlin' The episode title is a reference to the song Sherry Darling by Bruce Springsteen. The song tells about a young man's frustration with having to help his mother when all he wants to do is be with his girlfriend, Sherry.
