  • Episode Description
  • When Steve pops into Susan's flat, he accidentally sees Sally's naked bottom. This incident leads to dilemmas and awkwardness all round, which are dealt with in the classic sequence outlined by Jeff: the prickles (an embarrassed silence), the blurts (talking too fast), followed by the ‘head laugh’.

    • Junior shop assistant: Why do girls like you always have boyfriends? Susan: Because I have acute nymphomania and my own brewery.

    • Patrick: You guys may have sub-consciouses but let me tell you there is nothing going on in my head.

    • Sally: Having a bottom is living with the enemy. Not only do they spend their lives slowly inflating, they flirt with men while we're looking the other way.

    • Jeff: Stage One. The prickles. You can feel the prickles starting all over your face. If you just think the word blush, your head will inflate to three times its normal size. And then you realise you’re not saying anything. You’re stuck on pause. And you’ve forgotten how to work your face.

    • Steve: It’s not genetically possible for men to have opinions about fabric.

    Notes (1)

    • As of this episode, Jeff becomes the only one of the three male characters to not have seen the three main female characters naked. Steve dated both Susan and Jane, Patrick has dated Susan and it is revealed in the series finale to have already slept with Jane by this point in the show, and both Steve and Patrick see Sally naked in this episode.

    Trivia (1)

    • Jack Davenport (Steve) delivered his cushion speech in only one take.

    Allusions (1)

    • Steve: This is a sofa. It is designed by clever scientists in such a way so is to shield the unprotected user from the risk of skin-abrasions, serious headtrauma and, of course, (Steve ducks behind the sofa) Daleks. This is an allusion to the long-lived sci-fi-series "Doctor Who" in which the Daleks, a semi-robotic alien lifeform, are one of the arch-enemies. This series is so scary at times that most children only watch it from behind the sofa, hence Steves reference to the sofa granting protection from Daleks. In the UK this is such a well known fact that an exhibition on the series was even called "Behind The Sofa". In 2010, Coupling's creator and writer Steven Moffat took over as head writer and show runner for "Doctor Who."
