  • Episode Description
  • Jeff explains to the guys about 'The Giggle Loop': the danger that the more you try to suppress laughter in important silences, the harder you want to laugh. Jane's aunt has died, and she wants Steve to come to the funeral, pretending to be her boyfriend still. Susan invites herself, and so Patrick must come as her 'boyfriend', and all six end up going.

  • Quotes (9)

    • Agatha: 45. Sally: What? Agatha: I was 45 when I got married, when I looked just like you. Sally: What age are you now? Agatha: 92. Sally: Well, you must be getting pretty nervous then. Agatha: Nervous? Sally: Let's be honest. This is gotta be you last funeral standing up.

    • Jane: My auntie Margaret is dead! Steve: Right... Jane: Well say something! Steve: Shit!

    • Susan: Patrick, I need you. Patrick: Excellent, when and where.

    • Jeff: ( sadly, despairing, facing a wall) I can't turn off the naked people! Patrick: Great!

    • Jane (yelling at Steve from the sidewalk): What the hell do you take me for, Steve? I'm not trying to lure you back into bed with my dead aunt! The next night... Susan (yelling from the sidewalk, to Steve): Oh, for Christ's sake! Anyone can have a dead aunt!

    Notes (1)

    • Basis of the AmeriCoupling episode of the same name, except the Giggle Loop plot ends differently.

    Trivia (4)

    • At the funeral home, Jane & Steve agree that they went out for 4.5 years, even though in "Flushed", the length of time quoted was 4 years.

    • When the gang is driving to the funeral, Steve's driver's seat is on the left side, while in most cars in Great Britain the driver's seat is located on the right side.

    • When Jane shows up at Steve's door, the way she's holding her tissue gives impression that she's giving the finger to Steve (possibly intentional).

    • JEFFISM: Giggle Loop- When something bad or depressing happens, and you want to laugh but stop yourself. Then you think about how awful and funny it would be if you actually did laugh, which makes the urge to laugh grow more. Which in turn, leads you to think about how big your laugh would be now if you laughed at this point- during a solemn/bad/depressing time/situation, which grows your urge to laugh almost exponentially - almost in a head-exploding manner. It can go longer, depending on the person tempted to laugh.

    Allusions (3)

    • Sally: But, I didn't inhale. Sally's line about attending a funeral is quoted from Bill Clinton about his marijuana use from his '92 campaign.

    • Sally: It would be like James Bond going into SPECTRE control center. Reference to the famous British spy James Bond, based on the novels of Ian Fleming, which inspired several movies. SPECTRE is from the Bond movies (originally called SMERSH in the books), and is an evil organization that is a constant enemy to Bond.

    • Susan: Stop playing Reservoir Dogs. Reservoir Dogs is the 1992 debut feature film of director Quentin Tarantino. It portrays what happens before and after a botched jewel heist, but not the heist itself and stars an ensemble cast with Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Chris Penn, Steve Buscemi and Lawrence Tierney. The specific reference, though, is to an title scene of the movie, in which the gang is walking cooly down the street, all nattily dressed in black suits and ties, to the song "Little Green Bag", which is also playing when Steve, Patrick, and Jeff are walking in an obvious homage to it.
