Trivia, Quotes, Notes and Allusions

Notes (32)

  • The series was originally slated to debut on Halloween, but the network later decided to push the premiere back after managing to conclude that it wasn't a bright idea to launch it one week, then have it preempted the next for election night coverage. Yet, the next week ended up pretty much preempted anyway...

  • Guest star Larry Miller and co-creator/executive producer Eileen Conn are husband and wife.

  • Additional newsanchors are uncredited.

  • Hedy Burress' option was not picked up, and she was subsequently replaced by Emmy Laybourne (the daughter of former Nickelodeon head Geraldine Laybourne and producer Kit Laybourne). This was not due to a lack of talent, but rather due to a lack of good taste among NBC executives.

  • This is the second pilot. In the first, the Whitmans had two daughters instead of one, and both were played by former Freaks and Geeks cast members. Sarah Hagan was the book-smart Camilla and Joanna Garcia was the rebellious Lenore. The character of Lenore was written out, and Camilla became both daughters rolled into one. But Sarah Hagan (who would have been seriously miscast as the new Camilla) didn't get to keep her role. It was given to Lea Moreno Young, who had recently appeared in another Jack Burditt-produced pilot for the network (Just Married, which also featured recurring guest star Charlie Finn) that they passed on. If you looked at the revised pilot's end credits, you may have noticed that Hagan received a guest credit for appearing, though the character she played was not billed -- and she didn't appear. Garcia didn't receive anything. To top those cast changes off, more were made shortly thereafter, sparking the usual troubled production rumors.

  • Judith's dog, Betsy Ross, is played by Dagmar Buse. Lots of Dags in this show, eh!

  • Music: "Jump Around" by House of Pain; "I'll Never Make the Same Mistake Again" by Louis Prima

  • The rerun on January 2, 2001, the last airing in its original time slot, was seen in its entirety on both coasts.
