  • One day, in the loveliest of suburbs, housewife and mother Mary Alice Young (Brenda Strong) decided to take her own life. Now, from her elevated state of point of view, Mary Alice introduces us to the lives of her friends, neighbors andfamily members living in the idyllic Wisteria Lane, a street where the lawns are green, the houses are pretty, the people are nice... and the secrets are deadly. Her circle of girlfriends on Wisteria Lane includes: Susan Mayer (Teri Hatcher), an accident-prone hopeless romantic, always on the search of her happy ending; Lynette Scavo (Felicity Huffman), a harried mother who gave up on her successful career to become the full-time carer for her vast offspring; Bree Van de Kamp (Marcia Cross), coined "Martha Stewart-on-steroids", a perfectionist home fairy who strives to uphold an immaculate appearance; and Gabrielle Solis (Eva Longoria), a former top model turned trophy wife, who must adjust to a slightly more low-key life in the suburbs. From her unique vantage point, Mary Alice sees more now than she ever did alive, and she's planning to share all the delicious secrets that hide behind every neighbor's closed door in this seemingly perfect American suburb.Desperate Housewives stars Brenda Strong as Mary Alice Young, Teri Hatcher as Susan Mayer, Felicity Huffman as Lynette Scavo, Marcia Cross as Bree Van de Kamp, Eva Longoria as Gabrielle Solis, Ricardo Antonio Chavira as Carlos Solis, James Denton as Mike Delfino, Doug Savant as Tom Scavo, Nicollette Sheridan as Edie Britt (seasons 1-5), Andrea Bowen as Julie Mayer, Kyle MacLachlan as Orson Hodge (seasons 3-6), Kathryn Joosten as Karen McCluskey, Shawn Pyfrom as Andrew Van de Kamp, Madison De La Garza as Juanita Solis (seasons 5-8), Mark Moses as Paul Young (seasons 1-2; 7), Dana Delany as Katherine Mayfair (seasons 4-6), Kevin Rahm as Lee McDermott (seasons 4-8), Tuc Watkins as Bob Hunter (seasons 4-8), and Vanessa Williams as Renee Perry (seasons 7-8).Marc Cherry ("The Golden Girls") was executive producer and creator. • John: So, why are we here? Why are we doing this? [having an affair] Gabrielle: Because I don't want to wake up one morning with the sudden urge to blow my brains out. John: Hey, can I have a drag? Gabrielle: Absolutely not. You're much to young to smoke.

    • Rex: (to Bree)I want a divorce. I just can't live in this detergent commercial anymore.

    • Lynette: (to children)Now listen to me, you are going to behave. I will not be humiliated in front of the entire neighborhood. And just so you know that I'm serious, I am. (She pulls out paper) Son: What's that? Lynette: Santa's cell phone number! Son: How'd you get that? Lynette: I know someone who knows someone, who knows an elf. And if any of you acts up, so help me I will call Santa and tell him you want socks for Christmas! All right, are you willing to risk that?

    • Mary Alice: (closing voiceover) And suddenly there he was (referring to Mike). Like a phoenix rising from the ashes. And just like that, Susan was happy. Life was suddenly full of possibilities. Not to mention a few unexpected surprises. The next day my friends came together to pack away my clothes, my personal belongings and what was left of my life. Not quite, Gabrielle, not quite. How ironic to have something I tried so desperately to keep secret treated so casually. I'm so sorry, girls, I never wanted you to be burdened with this.

    • Mary Alice: (about Edie) Susan had met the enemy, and she was a slut.

    • Rex: I can't believe you tried to kill me. Bree: Yes, well, I feel badly about that.

    • Mary Alice: My name is Mary Alice Young. When you read this morning’s paper you may come across an article about the unusual day I had last week. Normally there is never anything newsworthy about my life, but that all changed last Thursday. Of course everything seemed quite normal at first. I made breakfast for my family, I performed my chores, I completed my projects, I ran my errands. In truth, I spent the day as I spent every other day, quietly polishing the routine of my life, until it gleamed with perfection. That’s why it was so astonishing when I decided to go to my hallway closet and retrieve a revolver that had never been used.

    • Gabrielle: This table is hand carved, Carlos had it imported from Italy. It cost him $22 000. John: So, you wanna do it on the table this time? Gabrielle: Absolutely.

    • Marc Cherry has said that Bree is based on his own mother.

    • The house that Bree Van De Kamp lives in was previously used in the NBC 1999 drama Providence.

    • According to the book Desperate Networks, show creator Marc Cherry insisted every actor had to audition for a part. Several actresses up for the part of Susan declined to audition and passed on the role. Felicity Huffman also declined to audition for the role of Lynette, preferring to be offered the role instead. Her agents convinced her otherwise, and she agreed to audition. Marc Cherry was so impressed with her performance, that he offered her the part.

    • Roselyn Sanchez lost the part of Gabrielle to Eva Longoria Parker at the final auditions.

    • A fan loved the dress Gabrielle wore in the pilot so much that she wrote to the producers asking for the name of the designer and if he could design her a prom dress. The producers instead sent her the actual gown and she wore it to her prom.

    • Dana Delany auditioned for the role of Bree and was offered the part. After thinking about it, she declined the role. Her reasoning was that she had played a similar role in the soap Pasadena, and felt she would be repeating herself. Still, in season four she joined the cast of "Desperate Housewives" playing Katherine Mayfair, a character that is very similar to Bree.

    • Calista Flockhart, Heather Locklear, and Mary-Louise Parker were considered for the role of Susan. Courteney Cox Arquette was also considered for the role of Susan. Marc Cherry didn't ask her because at the time she was pregnant with her daughter Coco and had expressed interest in taking some time off to raise the baby.

    • Marcia Cross originally tried for the part of Mary Alice Young, but was cast as Bree Van De Kamp. Nicollette Sheridan tried for the part of Bree Van De Kamp, but was cast as Edie Britt.

    Trivia (534)

    • Actually, 911 operators are required to obtain verbal confirmation of location/address from each caller, so if the 911 operator was doing his/her job correctly, he/she would have obtained Mary Alice's address first, then Mrs. Huber's. This "automatic computer database" obtains its information from the phone company, and it's not 100% reliable, so 911 Operaters are not permitted to rely on the information it provides unless the caller is unable to provide the location, for example with 911 hang up calls or callers that are not able to speak freely. And : If you're calling from a cell phone, there is no "automatic computer database" locator, so you should know where you are. Not true... the location setting on your cell phone allows the police to find you. That is why the only option is 911 only or allow all.

    • Goof: When Bree waters the flowers in the bathroom of the hospital, there is the shadow of the camera man visible behind her.

    • Goof: When Susan sits on Edie's couch, just after she throws the bra behind her and knocks the candles over, a crew member in blue jeans can briefly be seen moving on the floor behind the couch to the right.

    • The envelope that Mary Alice's blackmail note came in says Secretsville, USA instead of Fairview.

    • In this episode Mary Alice says she died on a Thursday, however on her tombstone, which is seen in the episode after it says she died on September 26th 2004. This date is a Sunday.

    • Mike's door is made of brown wood, but in later episodes it is white and has a screen door.

    • You can see that the sets are not the ones used later in the show. Lynette's house is the better example, it's clearly smaller and different. Susan's kitchen is different and so is Bree's dining room.

    • When Susan life's flashback are being shown you can see Karl coming out through the stairs. Anyway, the stairs are suddenly in the other side of the room, later we will see that the stairs are not on that side.

    • Bree Van De Kamp: "It's the reason why I joined the NRA."
Bree discusses with the girls on why she joined that NRA to keep in the back of her her husbands head not to cheat on her. The NRA stands for National Rifle Association, an organization in favor of using guns.

    • Edie's welcome gift is a dish of Sausage Puttenesca. Puttenesca is an Italian word that resembles 'prostitute'. Folklore has it that in Naples prostitutes used to make a pasta sauce that required little or no cooking and used their dishes as one more way of appealing to potential customers. The fact that Edie is bringing this dish is an allusion to her reputation.

    • Andrew: "You're the one with the problem, all right. You're the one who's acting she's running for mayor of Stepford." Bree Van De Kamp is described as "the perfect mother." Her son then makes a remark about Stepford. This is most likely a reference to the movie(s), The Stepford Wives (1975) (starring Katharine Ross) or the recent remake, The Stepford Wives (2004) (starring Nicole Kidman). The women living in the town of Stepford are too perfect à la Bree, and turn out to be robots.
