  • Quotes (4)

    • Turlough: The Doctor isn't as you say! Black Guardian: I am the Black Guardian. The Doctor's good is my evil!

    • The Doctor: Now, it's vitally important you remember exactly what happened. Brigadier: Look, it's all a long time ago, Doctor. I mean, surely what's past is- The Doctor: Very much in the present. Brigadier, you never did understand the interrelation of time. Brigadier: Not much call for that in A-level syllabus, Doctor.

    • Tegan: I hate those transmat things. Like travelling in a food mixer, and just as dangerous. I'd be afraid of coming out puréed!

    • The Doctor: And you teach? The Brigadier: Mathematics. (The Doctor looks sceptical.) The Brigadier: Oh I know how many beans make five, Doctor. You don't have to be a Time Lord to cope with A-level maths.

    Notes (3)

    • Nyssa and Tegan discuss the Zero Room, which helped the Doctor regenerate and was subsequently destroyed in Castrovalva, Part Two.

    • During his conversation with the Brigadier the Doctor mentioned every regular character from the U.N.I.T. era except Captain Mike Yates.

    • In Part Two, there is a flashback sequence when the Brigadier sees himself when he was at U.N.I.T. (from The Three Doctors, Episode Two), a Yeti (The Web of Fear, Episode 1), a Cyberman (The Invasion, Episode 5), the Second Doctor (The Three Doctors, Episode Two), an Axon (The Claws of Axos, Episode Four), the Daleks (Day of the Daleks Episode Four), the Third Doctor (Spearhead from Space, Episode 3), the First Doctor (The Three Doctors, Episode Two), the K-1 Robot (Robot, Part Two), a Zygon (Terror of the Zygons, Part Two) and the Fourth Doctor (Terror of the Zygons, Part Four).

    Trivia (3)

    • Other Mistake: When Nyssa and Tegan are debating going to the school for help, a loud clacking sound is heard in the studio.

    • The Black Guardian's line that the Doctor's good is his evil could be a possible nod to Sutekh's line to the Fourth Doctor in Pyramids of Mars: "Your evil is my good."

    • The story establishes that the Brigadier retired from U.N.I.T. in 1976, and that all of his U.N.I.T. appearances predate this story. However, the very first U.N.I.T. story, Season 6's The Invasion, can't be set earlier than 1978! (See The Invasion and Season 13's Pyramids of Mars for more information.) Eric Saward, script editor for this story, later conceded that the 1977/1983 dates used were a mistake.
