  • show Description
  • Many years have passed since Goku first searched for the Dragon Balls. He is a grown man, with a wife and son. He and his friends have settled into their own lives and, for the most part, things are rather peaceful. Then one day, Goku learns he is really a Saiyan and comes from another planet. Now begins new adventures for Goku and his friends as they defend their home against new, more powerful threats.moreless

    • Raditz: (to Piccolo) Power level three hundred and twenty, I can tell that you're not from this planet, but you'd be a fool to attack me.

    • Raditz: (to Goku) I see the fire in you, brother.

    • Raditz: Allow me to demonstrate a more effective attack. I call this one Keep Your Eyes on The Birdie! Now, keep your eyes on the birdie!

    • Raditz: (has just been blasted by Piccolo) Goodness! You've managed to singe a few of my leg hairs!

    • Raditz: (to Piccolo) Why so blue, green man? Is it because you're powerless to help your friend? Or is it 'cause you're just plain ugly?

    • Raditz: Kakarot, with the help of the full moon, you could have destroyed them all in a few years if you only had remembered! Goku: What's a full moon got to do with it?

    • Raditz: Huh, power level thirteen hundred and thirty, I can't block that!

    • Goku: Be strong Gohan, I'll be down to help you in a minute, hold on! Raditz: Ha, ha ha ha ha, you'll be down alright, but you won't be helping anybody.

    • English Uncut Episode: The New Threat

    • Japanese Air Date: April 26th, 1989

    • This is the first episode of DragonBall Z. The story advances five years from the time Goku defeated Piccolo in the martial arts tournament.

    • The order of the shows released on Toonami in the UK is Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT, and then Dragon Ball, which is the incorrect order.

    • Aside from already appearing in Dragon Ball this episode introduces Goku, Chi-Chi, Piccolo, Bulma, Master Roshi, and Krillin. This episode also introduces newcomers Gohan and Raditz.

    • Japanese Title: History's Greatest Warrior is Goku's Older Brother...

    • FUNimation calls this saga the Vegeta Saga on the Uncut Redub.

    • FUNimations episode titles for re-dub of this episode (Originally 2 episodes) is 1. The New Threat & 2. Reunions.

    Trivia (500)

    • The first shot is of a mountain that looks exactly like Mount Frappe, except without the purple clouds ontop, which had appeared a few episodes earlier in Dragon Ball.

    • When Raditz is speaking to Goku and the gang, he makes a reference to the history of Planet Vegeta. He says "3 year ago, our planet was destroyed by meteorites", but assuming Goku grew up as fast as a human, it would have been way longer than 3 years ago.

    • Raditz tells Piccolo that his energy blast managed to 'singe some of his leg hairs', but he doesn't have any! Maybe the energy blast singed all his leg hairs off.

    • This episode was actually two episodes in one. They got rid of the Gohan’s adventure story.

    • There is a timeline issue. The "Dead Zone" movie happens before this episode. Krillin seems to know Gohan already, but in this episode, Krillin is surprised that Goku has a son. That's because the movies do not follow the manga created by the original author. The movies are actually sidestories and were created from scratch. They do not necessarily fit into the main timeline.

    • According to Raditz Scouter Gohans Power level was 710. This would mean that Gohan would be considered a Elite Class Saiyan Warrior if he were born on Planet Vegeta.

    • When Vegeta and Nappa are first shown, their complete color scheme is different from when they first arrive on Earth, with Nappa wearing black/white armor instead of his normal dark blue/white armor and Vegeta wearing a strange orange/green armor and red hair instead of his normal blue/white armor and black hair. Fans have speculated that the odd color scheme may be because of the planet that they are currently on changing certain colors, but the more technical answer is most likely because the animators for the episode were not given any source to refer to when coloring both characters.

    • When Piccolo throws Gohan to the mountain it is shown that the mountain was considerably far away. But after Gohan does his damage to the mountain, the camera angle changes, showing that Piccolo only threw Gohan about 5 feet away from himself.

    Allusions (48)

    • The first ship Nappa destroys looks like a Star Trek shuttlecraft and has NCC -1701 A on the side. NCC-1701 A is the registry number for the USS Enterprise A in Star Trek .

    • Dragonball: After the team leaves the swamp on Namek, Bulma is singing the theme song to Dragonball. She doesn't get very far in it, needing to coax the others along, though.

    • (after seeing a giant whale) Vegeta: Ahh Moby Dick. Moby-Dick is a book about a Captain Ahab who leads his crew on a hunt for the great whale, Moby-Dick.

    • Gregory: No, they can't prove they hit me! They lied! (gets a huge bump) The way that Gregory had a bump growing out of his head the way he lied is similar to Pinocchio, whenever he lied, his nose would grow.

    • Each of the Ginyu Force's names is a pun on a food (more specifically a dairy) product: - Ginyu is a play on the Japanese term "gyuunyuu" meaning "cow's milk" - Guldo arranges the syllables in the Japanese pronunciation of "yogurt" - Jeice is a play on "cheese" - Butta is a play on "butter" - Recoome is a play on "cream"

    • Frieza: Now my friend, any last wishes before you go the way of the dodo. Frieza is referring to an extinct bird species.

    • At the end of the episode, the narrator describes Goku's transformation as "The sleeper has awakened," an allusion to the awakening of Paul Usul Muad'Dib Atreides in Frank Herbert's "Dune" after he drinks and survives the Water of Life and becomes more then human.

    • Golden hair & power: No quote
The 'idea' of a hero to get glowing hair & become powerful can be seen a few games. The one most noteable is 'Super Sonic' who debuted in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. There is also a fighting game called 'The Last Blade' in which the main character 'Kaede' would power-up and get gold hair. This would be Kaede's 'awakened' form. In the game's sequel, The Last Blade 2, he is always awakened, whereas in the first game, he would awaken by the means of a super move. Oddly enough though Kaede's black hair is tied at the end, but when he is awakened, his hair is not tied.
