  • Episode Description
  • A careless worker sparks an explosive fire in a high-rise building. Station 110 leads a full alarm response, assisted by Squad 51. A triage team from Rampart Hospital, led by Dr. Brackett, sets up in a nearby garage. Several workmen and two women — including the fiancee of a paramedic — remain trapped on the 16th floor. A Coast Guard helicopter assists in rooftop evacuation; Dixie and Dr. Early take charge of the many patients at Rampart. A paramedic is injured attempting a rescue, while Gage and DeSoto extricate themselves from a broken elevator. • Notes (2)

    • This was the first of six, two-hour-long made-for-television movies that aired on an irregular basis in 1978 and 1979, after the weekly series was cancelled.  The remainder of Station 51's A Shift crew (Captain Stanley, Chet Kelly, Marco Lopez, and Mike Stoker) do not appear in any of these movies except in flashback clips.

    • Scenes of the fire from the beginning of the episode not featuring Randolph Mantooth/ Kevin Tighe were also recycled into the later Quincy, ME episode "Smoke Screen". Scenes include an engine company hitting the hydrant, firefighters walking into the lobby and the exterior of the building on fire.

    Trivia (2)

    • The trivia statement above is wrong.  No footage is used from that movie.   All exterior shots of the building were taken at the Oppenheimer Tower on Wilshire Blvd. in Los Angeles.   They simply put a smoke machine on the roof and took pictures up the side of the building.  Note that you never seen flames coming out the building just smoke from the roof.   They had a Coast Guard Helicopter fly over the building, you never saw it land, and they filmed some shots in the Lobby,  on the streets outside of the building,  and a parking garage.   The rest was filmed on sets built for the purpose or used existing Rampart Hospital sets. Elevator shaft scene is filmed on a generic elevator shaft that I think is on Universal Studios lot.  Used in lots of movies and TV shows when they need a shaft to film in.  They also filmed on location at Station 110 at Marina Del Ray.

    • Several external building shots of the skyscraper on fire were directly recycled from the Irwin Allen movie The Towering Inferno.
