  • Episode Description
  • Carol goes into labor on the El train. Luka happens upon her and helps her to the ER. She delivers one twin there and is then taken up to Maternity, where she is cared for by OB nurse Abby Lockhart. Dr. Coburn delivers the second twin by emergency c-section. Mark abandons his Thanksgiving dinner at Elizabeth's to be Carol's birthing coach, leaving Elizabeth with his grumpy father and a rather sullen Rachel, who unexpectedly experiences her first menses. In the ER, Luka cares for an old woman who is dying on what happens to be her birthday. Dr. Dave helps Carter with a diagnosis of a very rare disease, and reveals that he went to medical school in Grenada.moreless

    Notes (5)

    • Though spelled correctly when he is listed as the series creator in the opening credits, Michael Crichton's last name is incorrectly spelled "Chrichton" when he is listed with the other executive producers in the end credits of this episode. This mistake was repeated in most of the Season 4 episodes and in all of the Season 6 episodes.

    • This is the first time Luka talks about his wife and kids.

    • In this episode, Maura Tierney makes her first appearance as Abby Lockhart. She would join the cast as a series regular four episodes later in "Abby Road."

    • Music: "Wondering Where the Lions Are," Bruce Cockburn

    • Although in the opening credits, Kellie Martin, Paul McCrane, and Eriq La Salle do not appear in this episode.

    Trivia (2)

    • In gratitude to Mark for being her birthing partner, Carol decides to name one of her babies after his mother. Upon learning that Mark's mom is named "Ruth," she hesitates, and Mark says that her middle name is "Katherine." Carol breathes a sigh of relief and says she likes "Kate."

    • When Luka finds Carol in active labor on an El platform bench, he helps her down the stairs to street level. This is odd, because on the platform they were right next to an operable elevator.
