    • Paul: It's time now to march against the Harkonnen! Time to drive their name back into the depths of Hell so that we may reclaim the planet and build a paradise together!

    • Baron Vladimir Harkonnen: Perverting common wisdom, nephew, is a mark of all great conspiracies.

    • Baron Vladimir Harkonnen: So let the emperor mock house Harkonnen, call us swine, because in the end his throne will be mine.

    • Baron Vladimir Harkonnen: A glorious winter is about to descend on House Atreides and all its heirs, and very soon, the years of humiliation visited upon my family will finally be avenged.

    • Water Master: Jamis carried 33 litres of tribe's water. Counted and measured. (hands over 2 waterbags containing Jamis' water to Stilgar) Stilgar: Combat water is entrusted to the winner. Because you fight without stillsuit, you may regain the water you lost fighting. (the Water Master presents Paul with a waterbag and Paul takes a sip) Stilgar: May you guard it for the tribe, preserve it against loss, be generous with it in time of need. May you pass it on in your time for the good of the tribe.

    • Space Guild representative: It's said that Fremen drink the blood of their dead. Isn't that so, Dr Kynes? Dr Kynes: Not the blood sir. All of a man's water. A necessity when one lives in the deep desert. The human body is 70 % water, surely a dead man no longer requires it.

    • Emperor Shaddam: I am the emperor! Paul: Not for long.

    • Jessica: I've seen what you've seen Paul. I know what's coming, what you're about to let loose, not just here on Arrakis but across the entire universe Paul: But I am powerless to stop it. Jessica: Are you? Paul: A terrible purpose awaits us, mother. This vast organism we call humanity is about to reinvent itself from the ashes of its own complacency. The sleeper has awakened.

    Notes (7)

    • The Director's Cut Special Edition DVD, which was released in 2000, contains over 30 minutes of footage that was not shown when the mini-series originally aired on the SciFi Channel.

    • One of the most famous lines in the original novel is the Litany against Fear, a Bene Gesserit method to deal with fear. The line is as follows: "I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain." For the mini-series they changed the wording of this litany and abbreviated it. In the mini-series the litany is as follows: "I will not fear. Fear is the mind killer. I will face my fear and it will pass through me and when it is gone there will be nothing, only I will remain."

    • In the novel, the main character, Paul Atreides, is only 15 years old. John Harrison, the director, chose to cast a slightly older actor to increase the quality of acting for such an important character.

    • Alec Newman, the actor playing the main protagonist, Paul Atreides, admitted he had not read any of the Dune books before filming the miniseries.

    • Despite being shot in 2:1 aspect ratio, the mini-series was broadcast in the standard 16:9 aspect ratio.

    • In various interviews, director Harrison mentioned that his first choice for the role of Lady Jessica was actress Alice Krige, however she was unavailable and Saskia Reeves got to play the part. Alice Krige did get to play the part in Children of Dune, the sequel mini-series.

    • In 2001, this mini-series won two Emmy Awards: one for "Cinematography" and one for "Visual Effects", in addition to being nominated for a third for "Sound Editing".

    Trivia (3)

    • Even though John Hurt received top billing (his name is shown even before the title of the show) he really only appears in episode 1. Both his 5-second appearances in episode 2 and 3 are in one of Paul's visions.

    • Sietch Tabr, as shown in this episode is above ground. This is a change from the novels, in which all sietches were located in caves, below ground.

    • Goof: The window in Leto and Jessica's bedroom is open, as can be seen by the wind moving her hair. On Dune windows would never be open, because too much moisture could escape.

  • Fan Reviews (2)
  • Dune gives mixed feelings and it begs for comparisons with the Lynch movie... but although it succeeds on beeing a true adaptation, it fails on beeing a real movie...
