A mildly enjoyable, yet mostly mediocre mid-season episode.

Season five was without a doubt one of the most bi-polar of the series, containing some of the most memorable episodes, while also containing some of the weakest, Beware of Greeks was sadly one of the latter. There are some highly enjoyable jokes though, including a running joke in which Niles tries to escape his large-chested cousin Yvonne, or Frasier doing bouzouki dancing. However, these amusing segments are marred by poor story decisions and cheap gags. The first would be the guest stars, who aside from Patti LuPone as Aunt Zora and Lori Harmon as cousin Yvonne, are all sub-par. The worst of the bunch being Joseph Will as Cousin Niko, who comes off as a total weeny and numskull who can't seem to realize that his mother the one causing all the problems. He's a character who, being so critical to the episode grates on your nerves with every viewing. However, the most puzzling and ludicrous part of the episode is the writers' decision to give Martin a brother, which seems completely useless, like it was only added to serve the episode, and then never used again for the rest of the series. This move just seems lazy and quickly takes you out of the moment, removing any of the charm left of the episode. Overall, a below average episode for such a great show.moreless

Frasier and Niles get involved in their Greek aunt's restaurant and their cousin's love life.

I'm a a late-comer to Frasier--I started watching the reruns, but I have watched the episodes many times. There are a few episodes that I skip when they rerun them--mainly the ones where people from Cheers show up. However, the episode "Beware of Greeks" is a particularly unusual episode and really out of the continuity of the show. Perhaps it was created around the same time the movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" was popular. A Greek aunt of Frasier's is suddenly introduced out of the blue (as well as a brother of Martin's). These newly introduced relatives had never been mentioned before because Martin had a falling out with his brother and never talked to him. I feel that the episode was just thrown into the series for some unknown reason. It doesn't fit in with the rest of the series.moreless
