Quotes (17)

  • (Joey won't get off Chandlers chair) Joey: All right! You can have the chair. Chandler: Really! Joey: Oh my, would you look at that! (Holds up crossed fingers)

  • Ross: (About Monica deciding whether to call Richard) Yeah, see Mon, listen, listen. When Carol and I broke up, I went through the same thing. And you know what I did? Monica: Huh? Ross: I... got... dressed. Really, really quickly. Okay, okay.

  • Monica: Maybe we could call the phone company. Maybe they could change the message. Maybe they can change his number. Phoebe: Yeah, after this, I think he'll be doing that himself.

  • Rachel: You guys, do this look like something the girlfriend of a paleontologist would wear? Phoebe: I don't know. You might be the first one.

  • Phoebe: Rachel didn't have anything I liked but she had this Christmas ribbon and I thought, "Alright, I'll be political." Chandler: What are you supporting? Phoebe: Duh, Christmas.

  • Chandler: The cushions are the essence of the chair! Joey: That's right! I'm taking the essence.

  • Ross: (After Joey gets humus on Phoebe's dress) Don't rub it! What gets out hummus? What gets out humus? Phoebe: Monica, Monica! You know, what gets out hummus? Monica: If it is a new message, what is he calling to say? Phoebe: Okay, thanks. Yeah, I'll try that.

  • Joey: What's the matter, Ross? You nervous about your speech? Ross: Nope. (Pause) You wanna hear it? Joey: Am I in it? Ross: Ya huh. Yeah, right after I thank everyone for giving money to the museum, I sing a song about the wonder that is Joey.

Notes (4)

  • International Episode Title: Czech Republic: Rossovo utrpení (Ross Suffering)

  • This is one of Friends few bottle episodes. Except for the closing-credits scene and a two-line voice-over by Tom Selleck, it utilizes no guest stars or extras whatsoever, and only one set.

  • #3 in "NBC's 6 Favorite Friends Episodes Countdown"

  • This episode runs 23:51 on DVD (a typical sitcom runs about 22:00).

Trivia (9)

  • Trivia: The joke Ross is telling when the episode's tail starts is also an inside joke on the show. The punch-line, "Cro-Magnum PI," is an obvious reference to Magnum PI starring Tom Selleck as PI Thomas Magnum. Selleck had, as of this episode, appeared as Richard Burke in six episodes; he would later appear in two more AND his voice is used, uncredited, as Burke in this very episode. The producers will do something similar later in the same season involving actress Marlo Thomas and a T-shirt.

  • Goof: When Joey comes back into Monica's apartment and says that Chandler took his underwear, Chandler says it is because Joey took his "essence" aka his cushions. However, Chandler never left the apartment after Joey took his "essence" so he would not have been able to go back to his apartment and take Joey's underwear. He must have taken it beforehand...

  • Goof: When Phoebe comes out of the bathroom after trying to get out the humus stain, the bathroom door is left wide open. However, when Monica is playing her message, the door is suddenly almost shut, though no one had gone near the door.

  • Continuity: In the beginning of the episode there is a message on the machine from Rachel's sister. However the voice is obviously not Reese Witherspoon or Christina Applegate who will later play her sisters. Also, she's asking if Rachel slept with Donnie because he shouted "2 for 2", implying that he's now slept with both sisters. However, Rachel has two sisters.

  • Goof: Chandler sits on Joey in an attempt to regain possession of his seat. When he stands up, the shirt sleeve on his left arm becomes unrolled and slides down. The camera cuts to face Ross and Chandler's sleeve is now rolled back up.

  • Trivia: The New Oxford English Dictionary now includes a definition for "going commando." They actually credit this phrase to Friends.

  • Goof: The hummus stain on Phoebe's yellow dress changes size throughout the episode.

  • Goof: In the beginning of the episode, when Rachel comes out of the bathroom, she has on one black sock and one white sock. This is true but probably not a goof. Executive Producer Marta Kauffman refers to it as a touch she "loves" in the audio commentary to this episode on the Friends DVD; remember, the girls are getting dressed for a big event amidst a variety of distractions.

Allusions (4)

  • Ross: So I said, "Who are you Cro-Magnum P.I.?" Magnum, P.I. was an American television show that followed the adventures of Thomas Magnum (played by Tom Selleck aka Dr. Burke), a private investigator living in Hawaii. The Cro-Magnons were the earliest known European examples of Homo sapiens.

  • Rachel: Ross, that was a Halloween costume. Unless you would like me to go to this thing as Little Bo Peep. Ross: Look, I didn't recognize it without that inflatable sheep. Rachel: Yeah, which, by the way, Chandler, I would like back one of these days. Little Bo Peep is a character from a nursery rhyme.

  • Chandler: Ok, you will notice that I am fully dressed. I in turn have noticed that you are not. So, in the words of A.A. Milne: "Get out of my chair, dillhole!" Alan Alexander Milne, also known as A. A. Milne, was a British author, best known for his books about the teddy bear Winnie the Pooh and for various children's poems. Obviously, this is not actually one of the writer's quotes.

  • Chandler: Donald Duck never wore pants, yet when he came out of the shower he always put a towel around his waist. I mean, what's that about? Donald Duck is a Disney cartoon character.
