  • show Description
  • Tohru Honda is a cheerful 16 year old girl. She was taken in by her grandpa when her mother was killed in a car accident. Not wanting to burden anyone, she gets her tent and begins to live in a forest. She is determined to finish school in order to fulfill her mother's last wish. But, it turns out that the land Tohru is living on belongs to the Sohma family. She is quickly invited to live in the Sohma house (all males), as long as she is willing to cook and clean. One of the Sohma's, Yuki, is the most popular boy at Tohru's high school. He is swooned by girls constantly and is even referred to as the "prince" of the school. His cousins Shigure and is shortly introduced to Kyo by him jumping through the window and starting to fight Yuki that makes up the rest of the household. Tohru knows that her living environment is out of the normal, but things turn out to get stranger. The members of the Sohma family are possessed by animals and they turn into their animal form when they are hugged by the opposite sex! You can imagine Tohru's surprise when she witnesses their secret. She promises not to tell a soul, but the "cat" may already be out of the bag. This series will focus on the "uncut" and "re-versioned" dub by Funimation, the same folks who dubbed Dragonball Z and Fullmetal Alchemist. Airdates shown are from the Japanese version. • Shigure: If we eat out like this all the time, I'm going to have to buy a bigger robe. Yuki: Well then, why don't you do the cooking? Shigure: Why? Every time I make dinner you complain. Yuki: Pickled radish and curry is not dinner. It's disgusting.

    • Yuki: (about Tohru) It's amazing... She always seemed so cheerful at school. You'd never guess she's been suffering like this for so long... When I was young, there were many times I wanted to run away from Sohma House. I never did, I could always find some rationalization to stay. The fact of the matter is, I just wasn't strong enough, or I could've left. I could've lived in the woods by myself in a tent. I could've done what she did. (sigh) Shigure: You can call it amazing. But I don't think the word does it justice. Yuki: No. No, it doesn't.

    • Kyo: (to Yuki) That's right. You better get your tough talk out of the way while you can cause I'm about to wipe that stupid little smirk right off your face! Tohru: Wait, stop! Don't fight! (Tohru trips and lands on Kyo; a puff of pink smoke appears.) Shigure: Yuki, what were all those crashing sounds I just heard? Kyo's not here, is he? Tohru: I'm so sorry! Are you alright? I... (Kyo is revealed as a cat) I turned him into a cat! I'm so sorry! I don't know how it happened, but we're going to help you, okay?! Shigure: Uh, excuse me... Tohru: Hurry, we need to get him to a doctor right away!

    • (Tohru enters her tent.) Tohru: Hi mom. I'm home. But I can't sleep yet. I still have a paper to write. I'm just going to go down to the stream and wash up a little OK? (Tohru steps out of the tent, Yuki and Shigure stare at her from behind some bushes. Shigure bursts out laughing.) Yuki: Shigure, don't you think you're overdoing it?

    • Yuki: I know the place is dirty. And I realize the idea of living with two strange boys might seem a little awkward. But there is an extra room up stairs, you're welcome to stay there if you like. Tohru: No, no, no; Out of the question. Yuki: We’re not that strange. Tohru: No, I didn’t mean it like that.

    • Shigure: The woods aren't too safe. You've got wild animals, landslides, the occasional weirdo prowling around...

    • Shigure: Hmm... there was another landslide. Tohru: What?! Yuki: Was it close? Shigure: Close to the te- (sings cheerfully) I mean not at all!

    Notes (55)

    • Meredith Mauldin (Kagura, other voices) is credited as Meredith McCoy for the series.

    • Finally on TV On September 4, 2006, Funimation started broadcasting Fruits Basket on their anime block on Colours TV at 8:30pm. This marks the first time Fruits Basket has been shown on cable television in the US, although it was a local service.

    • DVD Volume 1 Easter Egg See goofy outtakes from the voice actors. In the Extras menu, highlight the Character Profile option. Then press: left, down, right, up, left, enter According to Laura, there's supposedly one where a box falls on a voice actor (Monica Rial?) and she swears ;)

    • Character names Tohru is a popular boy's name. Kyo translates to "today". Yuki translates to "snow".

    • Editor's Note: The Japanese main cast will be checkboxed in episode 11. All other episodes will feature the American voice actors in the cast list. The Japanese writer/director credits will be listed where possible. Some writers/directors are not in the directory yet ,so rather than create a bunch of Japanese empty person guides, some of them will be added here as Notes.

    • Throughout the series, there are some pictures called Eyecatches that are used to cut in between different scenes and for the commercial breakaways. Each of these are unique and some feature the characters as iconifications of themselves. Tohru, for example, is shown as being a rice ball. The Sohmas are shown as their animal counterparts. Uotani's nickname is Uo, which is Japanese for Fish. Hanajima's nickname is Hana, which Japanese for "flower". She's shown as a flower with an evil grin.

    • Anime/Manga difference: When Tohru asks for help. Anime: She is talking to a mail man. Shigure, in dog form, picks up the mail with his mouth. Manga: She is talking to a food delivery boy. Shigure, in dog form, holds in his mouth some money.

    • Kagura's dress - anime and manga Kagura wears a short dress in both the manga and the anime. On Volume 5 of the manga, she wears black leggings on the cover.

    Trivia (18)

    • Shigure worked hard on the Zodiac stones, yet the stones are never seen again in the anime series and the manga doesn't mention them either.

    • In the kitchen, Tohru's shirt color changes from pink to blue.

    • After the incident occurs when Tohru finds out the secret, the whole crew sits at the table. When Shigure was saying to Tohru that they must seem pretty strange to them, if you notice, Kyo is missing his bead bracelet. For those who are just starting to watch, it may seem like no big deal. But trust me, it is a VERY big deal.

    • Originally in the manga Tohru's uncle calls her 'Tohru-chan' in which Yuki points his finger in his face saying 'Don't call her Tohru-chan like you're her friend. Lowlife.'

    • In the manga, Tohru's grandpa keeps calling her Kyoko, her mom, but in the anime, he calls her Tohru, her real name.

    • In the manga, Shigure remarks to Yuki and Kyo that they are "rescuing the princess." But in the anime, Shigure doesn't even come out.

    • It was never mentioned on how Arisa brought a lead pipe into school despite a rule making such act forbidden.

    • Slower transformation? Normally when members of the zodiac are hugged by someone of the opposite sex, they transform instantaneously. But when Hatori catches Tohru, it takes a moment for him to transform. Answer: Two words- Slow Motion

    Allusions (15)

    • The Zodiac stones that Shigure had set out to dry are considered an old custom among the Japanese.

    • Chinese Zodiac as Kyoko explains it Kyoko: A long, long time ago, God decided to invite all the animals to a banquet. He sent out word for all of them to come to his house the following evening and don't be late! When the mischievous rat heard the news, he decided to play a trick on his neighbor, the cat. He told the cat that the party was the day after tomorrow. The very next day, all the animals lined up for the celebration. And the rat led the way, riding all the way there on the back of the cow. Everyone had a wonderful time. Except for the cat that was fooled, who missed the whole thing. The order in which the animals arrive dictates their place in the zodiac. So the rat is first, and the pig is last. It can also be argued (which the series doesn't) that the Tiger is a cat. But the regular house cat (Chinese: mao, Japanese: Neko) isn't in the zodiac. In the Vietnamese version, the house cat does exist as a zodiac member; it replaces the rabbit.

    • With regards to the birth years not matching the Zodiac cycle: In the manga, its told that whenever a member of the Zodiac dies, the next born child will take their place, regardless of the year.

    • Zodiac so far: Dog: Shigure, Tohru (see actual episode): Kagura Rat: Yuki (Cat: Kyo) If their birth years match the Chinese Zodiac, Kagura would be only one year older, and Tohru would be two years older. This is contradicted in this episode: Kagura is two years older than Yuki, Tohru is about the same age as Yuki. So matching birth years to the characters breaks down here.

    • Hana: A cat and a mouse. (Yuki and Kyo freeze.) That's what they're like. Uo: Oh Yeah. What was that show called something and Jerry. Uo refers to the fighting between Kyo and Yuki resembling the show Tom and Jerry, an American cartoon about a cat forever chasing a mouse.

    • Cultural festivals are typical of most Japanese city schools. They consist of games, contests, and prizes sponsored by each class.

    • New Year's in Japan is much like the American holiday of Christmas in which gifts are given, and many go to see their families and friends. Also, because it's the Chinese Zodiac, it is the same as the Chinese New Year, which is later in the year than the Western calendar.

    • Each Sohma is called to dance on their New Year's Day. Since it's Momiji's turn (Year of the Rabbit), this puts the series at approximately 1999. If the Chinese Zodiac ages apply, Momiji would be 12 years old, but with those rules went out the window at episode 4. Momiji's age is revealed later.
