    • Tyrion Lannister: My brother has his sword and I have my mind--and a mind needs books like a sword needs a whetstone.

    • Jorah Mormont: In the Shadow Lands beyond Asshai, they say there are fields of ghost grass with stalks as pale as milk that glow in the night; it murders all other grass. The Dothraki believe that one day it will cover everything; that's the way the world will end.

    • Robb Stark: You've said goodbye to Bran? (Jon nods) He's not going to die. I know it.
Jon Snow: You Starks are hard to kill.
      Robb Stark: My mother?
Jon Snow: She was very kind.
Robb Stark: Good. Next time I see you, you'll be all in black.
Jon Snow: It was always my color.
      Robb Stark: Farewell, Snow.
      Jon Snow: And you, Stark.

    • Jaime Lannister: Tell me you're not thinking of taking the black?
Tyrion Lannister: And go celibate? The whores would go begging from Dorne to Casterly Rock. No, I just want to stand on top of the Wall and piss off the edge of the world.

    • Eddard Stark: (to Jon Snow) There's great honor serving in the Night's Watch. The Starks have manned the Wall for thousands of years. And you are a Stark. You might not have my name, but you have my blood.

    Notes (2)

    • Sophie Turner, the actress playing Sansa Stark, later adopted Zunni, the dog who played Lady.

    • Filming the episode with the dogs proved difficult as Sean Bean has reported. In his scene with Lady, the animal was too scared to remain still. They had to keep rehearsing the scene until the dog felt comfortable, making the scene's shooting take three hours instead of the few minutes it should have taken.

    Trivia (3)

    • In the opening credits, both Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) and Iain Glen (Ser Jorah Mormont) mistakenly have the Lannister lion sigil next to their names while Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) has the Targaryen dragon sigil next to hers.

    • Eddard Stark reveals that the name of Jon Snow's mother is Wylla.

    • For this episode King's Landing, Winterfell, the Wall, and Vaes Dothrak rise from the model world in the opening credits.
